    Chapter 30

That's an interesting point. Summers are forever when you're young. Going back to school, especially with all this stuff going on, is going to be pretty weird for Will.

    Chapter 30

I think Jason nailed it in his review. There are a lot of forces at work here, and Marie is fighting her own version of what Will went through in "Paternity", at least from her perspective. Now I think she's gotten addicted to the drama, and that's why things are completely out of control.

    Chapter 30

Thanks. I thought the line about Will and Erik being luckier if they'd hooked up with each other at New Year's summed up that whole sequence. JP's modus operandi in this situation is to stay in the background and to only get involved when he needs to preserve the family. While Marie is most certainly family, he'll let Claire and Jack work on her, because they'd probably resent his interference, unless it gets out of hand. It may be there.

    Chapter 30

You're right about Will not solving the problems with Marie and Ferris, but I think the solution is ultimately in his strategy. If he ignores them, and the thing just fades away, it makes them seem impotent. And it makes their bullshit attempts to hurt Will pretty feeble.

    Chapter 30

My personal experience is that people (especially teens) act like idiots (as you've portrayed) when they're really stressed. I think you're right about Will's attitude toward Stef and Brad, to a point. To Will, with all the other things going on in his life, it must seem like they're kicking him when he's down.

    Chapter 30

You did a superb job of capturing in words what I've visualized as Marie's issue. She's gotten caught up in the scheme, and the drama of the scheme, and divorced herself from reality.

    Chapter 30

I love your constructive criticism analogy! I think it's not that Erik is stupid, I think that he's naive, and out of his league with these people. That's why he was taking a direct route, and just asking Will. When he walked out onto that gazebo, I'll bet he was trying to decide if he'd end up kicking Will's ass again or not.
  8. Hope you had a great time on your birthday!

    Chapter 30

August 20, 2001 “What do you mean you wanted to know if you got it from me? You think I gave you genital warts?” I asked, freaking out. “We haven’t even had sex.” “Yet,” he said, winking at me, to try to get me to calm down. He sighed when he saw it wasn’t working. “When I got it, I confronted Kyle, and he said he got it from you.” I was so mad my face was probably bright red. “He told you that? He told you that he got it from me?” I demanded. “That

    Chapter 60

Unmolested? After I have already toiled with you so badly? Molested is more my style. ;-)
  11. And Calvert is the hero of the day. What an awesome guy he is.

    Chapter 60

Yeah, I don't usually do sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows all that well. Just ask Sharon. But it was sad to see both of them go. And it was kind of fun to annoy the Calvert haters by having him save the day. ;-)

    Chapter 60

You raise a good point, and that is that they really were at the mercy of the wind. And the waves. But if the winds are foul, and you have an unhandy ship, you'll possibly end up going backwards. To me, that would be maddening, what with my need for instant gratification. :-)

    Chapter 60

Thanks for the nice comments! This chapter saw the death of two heros: Bacchante and Humphreys.

    Chapter 60

Great review. I have to say though, that death in those days was not all that uncommon, war or not. Disease and pestilence were major killers. Quite frankly, I've probably been generous in letting so many survive this voyage (so far).

    Chapter 60

Our review system is flawed, Terry, but thanks for trying!

    Chapter 60

I'm glad you liked it. I think that Humphreys would have liked the way he will be remembered: dying in battle to save his ship and his crew.
  18. Happy Birthday! I hope you have a great day!

    Chapter 60

Thanks Mike. I'm sure that Granger will be quite devastated at losing his ship, so many of his men, and Humphreys.

    Chapter 60

August 4, 1798 HMS Bacchante, aground “Alright men,” Humphreys said loudly to the crew. Everyone stopped to listen to him except the men loading and aiming the carronade. “Those natives are looking to board us. We’re going to fight them off, and after that, they’ll leave us alone.” Humphreys was fairly certain they would do no such thing, but he was trying to inspire them. “There will be no quarter. You saw what they did to our jacks, and they’ll do the same thing to you

    Chapter 59

Things do indeed appear dire. Time to post another chapter!
  22. Mark Arbour

    Chapter 29

Well, We'll go on the assumption that Will doesn't have warts, but like you said, it's pretty common. And while most people aren't freaked out by them, I think that teenagers like Erik would be completely freaked out, at least at first.

    Chapter 29

Hank is the only character you're worried about? You need to broaden your circle of concern. :-(
  24. Mark Arbour

    Chapter 29

I think Will reacts that way because he's used to it. He's been raised in a family where he's always been at the apex, and barring some incredible disaster, it's unlikely that his family will suddenly go broke and he'll be living in Sunnyvale with Noah. Ponder how many things in your life that are familiar to you, but may seem unique to others. John has been pretty heads-up with Will lately, and I think the way he apologized about talking about Kyle and Will in the very beginning of this thing shows that he is pretty transparent. John was probably talking to Marie about it so being overheard was plausible.

    Chapter 29

I think you nailed it with Will. He just doesn't really care all that much about what other people think unless it becomes critical, and he's disliked by everyone. I'd expect him to remain pretty obtuse and disengaged unless his reputation is under assault.
