  1. As dark as the days get, we need to be reminded of light at the end of the tunnel, and the absoluteness of human forgiveness. From the Met's famous 1990 production, Kurt Moll In deisen heil'gen hallen (and has there ever been a finer actor bass on stage...? I doubt it) "In these holy halls Revenge is not known. And if a man has fallen Love leads him to duty. Then he walks by his friend's hand Happy and joyous to the better land. Within these sacred walls, Where man loves man, No traitor can lurk, For the enemy is forgiven. Whom such teachings do not please, Deserves not to be a man." [translation by DeepL]
  2. Anyone post this song yet? Abe Parker Butterflies
  3. I don't know if you are aware of it, but the very person who was so admired by Holleran, his buddies, and an entire generation of Gay club-goers survived the epidemic and published a memoirs of these same times. Alan Helms, Young Man from the Provinces (Boston 1995). It makes fascinating reading, especially at how isolating being raised to Adonis status made him feel. _
  4. I've decided to post an excerpt or two in the Mirror prose collection. One section that really sticks out in my mind is before the central character comes out, he falls in love with the boy who cuts the grass of his suburban home. What other segments do you feel GA readers might enjoy; the ones that really stick in your mind and have meaning?
  5. Holleran and his Dancer From The Dance, which he consciously wrote to be a Great Gatsby for the 1970s, are among the very, absolute 1% best of Gay writers and fiction. I couldn't agree with you more for mentioning it here
  6. . "Psssst... Don't let on, but "Aunt" Chris is still packing what the Good Lord gave her."
  7. Venus, fed to the teeth with her sister's frigid self-repression, sends her brat Cupid to cut down Diana's power-giving tree. Along way the gender-fluid 'boy' manipulates three clueless regular guys and three thirsty nymph(o)s. Toss all together with two of the best musical minds the golden age of the Vienna School ever produced and what do you get? The world best ever Valentine's Day opera! Lorenzo da Ponte's L'arbore di Diana with music by Vincent Martín i Soler
  8. A fantastic "revisit"!!! If there is any way to relaunch the Secret Author collections, looking at the high quality this Valentine's Day edition, we can all be assured the submissions will do GA credit
  9. Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic perform the Adagio from Bruckner's 7th symphony
  10. "You said it, honey."
  11. It's a very inward looking performance, and there's nothing wrong with that. A rainy-evening type of interpretation like Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations
  12. Citation, please
  13. I flagged something in my book-editing efforts this morning. Adverb-verb arrangement; what is your preference? My example: "He truly began to like Kitchiner", or would you feel it's more natural so say: "He began truly to like Kitchiner"? Do you follow any set rules?
  14. John Pizzarelli's 1992 recording of the Gershwins' "Little Jazz Bird." What you hear is the original 1924 orchestration of the piece for Broadway, which is awesome.
  15. Although the 1927 recording, with the magical Lawrence Brown on piano, gives me goosebumps
  16. @Zombie * does "paul robeson deep river 1957" youtube search for you * Hopefully one of these will work in your particular internet hinterland https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=paul+robeson+deep+river+1957
  17. This is a valuable feature of GA. Cheers to all of the team's hard work!!!
  18. no idea -- @ReaderPaulMaybe Dick Tracy
  19. "Especially where DICK is concerned!"
  20. Paul Robeson performing Deep River in 1957 Nothing could be more sublime
  21. An intriguing find...1796 is the glorious year that saw Haydn write and perform his "Miracle" symphony in London, but I suspect March felt more in direct competition with his fellow Brit, Clementi. So I see your Marsh symphony with Clementi's breathtaking Symphony No. 1 from about the same time. (Oddly, this composer has two Symphony No. 1s, the first being from about 1785 and the latter dating to a decade later.) Here is Francesco d'Avalos leading the The Philharmonia orchestra

  23. I wonder how the reunion of Jasper and Xavier will go and then, somehow, Kyle will have to be added into that reunion?! Just in case, I hope Xavier kept his "escape" convertible!
  24. For the 007 Halloween crowd
  25. Thank goodness he had that stick to beat it back
