  1. Right on both: Whenever Richard Cory went down town, We people on the pavement looked at him: He was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim. And he was always quietly arrayed, And he was always human when he talked; But still he fluttered pulses when he said, "Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked. And he was rich - yes, richer than a king - And admirably schooled in every grace; In fine we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light, And went without the meat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head. -- Edwin Arlington Robinson They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town With political connections to spread his wealth around Born into society, a banker's only child He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style But I work in his factory And I curse the life I'm living And I curse my poverty And I wish that I could be Oh I wish that I could be Oh I wish that I could be Richard Cory The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht! Oh he surely must be happy with everything he's got But I, I work in his factory And I curse the life I'm living And I curse my poverty And I wish that I could be Oh I wish that I could be Oh I wish that I could be Richard Cory He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch And they were grateful for his patronage and they thanked him very much So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read: "Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head" But I, I work in his factory And I curse the life I'm living And I curse my poverty And I wish that I could be Oh I wish that I could be Oh I wish that I could be Richard Cory -- Paul Simon, 1966 - on the Sounds of Silence album
  2. k - saw this yesterday and found it hilarious. If you haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, and can't wait for the DVD, here is a link to a 30-second version of it re-enacted by bunnies. Brokeback Mountain - condensed Warning - it really (in my opinion) is an accurate quick take on Brokeback Mountain - including spoilers... PS - Make sure to have your sound on
  3. Actually, we're west coast - so you got it in on time ;-)
  4. Friends of mine actually had that phrase - though in a normal voice - read by the minister to open their wedding... Those in the crowd who got it, started cracking up...
  5. DK - don't you dare reply to James... Melody, Zoe - HIDE!
  6. Saffron typically colors rice or other dishes a very distinctive yellow - "Saffron Yellow" in fact. So yes, while the stamen that you buy in the store is a red, most people I think know saffron as the color of the dish. If you do a search for saffron paint, you'll see results like: Saffron yellow BTW - yes, I have seen "Saffron red" described as a color - but without the color modifier afterwards, I tend to think of yellow when I hear saffron ("she had saffron-colored hair" = blonde).

    Suicide

I agree with Dom - the biggest thing to realize is that things can and will get better - but if you aren't here to be there for it, you won't realize it. No one else can really know your situation - but like many others, I have been down in the past and thinking about ending it as well. Lonliness, isolation - the only good thing was also cowardice which made me put it off for "one more night." That was about 12 years ago... and just kept realizing, if I wasn't around, I couldn't see what might happen. I got lucky - but I don't think its an accident. Right now - my life is pretty great. I have someone very supportive and loving in my life. Things aren't perfect - I haven't talked to my mom in about 6 years. But I enjoy every day that I'm here now... cause there are so many cool things to do, see, be a part of... You have people here that know.... that care... Realize that others have gone through things as bad or even worse than you have now - and made it. I hope you make it - if you need any help - we are here... Please help us by helping yourself - give yourself more chances...

    She's such a brat

Possibly she thinks he might be bi, and is afraid you'll steal him from her?
  9. YAY - looks like it has WIDELY expanded for Jan 6. It's hard to find individual showtimes, I've checked both fandango.com and moviefone.com and they each have some listings, but not all. I am VERY glad it is coming to Sacramento - Dan and I plan on seeing it again this weekend. On the Official Brokeback Mountain movie website, they have a list of all of the locations opening this Friday. Here is a cut and paste of it: STARTING JANUARY 6 Amarillo Amarillo Star Stadium Asheville Fine Arts Theatre Athens Beechwood Stadium 11 Birmingham Rave Vestavia Hills Boise The Flicks 4 Buffalo Dipson Theatres North Park Charlotte Regal Cinemas Manor Charlottesville Regal Cinemas Downtown Mall 6 Cincinnati Esquire National Amusements Kenwood Towne Centre Colorado Springs Cinemark Carefree Circle 17 Twin Peak 2 Corpus Christi Century 16 Des Moines Fleur Cinema and Caf
  10. Word of warning... with the film expanding (finally) this Friday to a LOT more theaters... if you haven't read the story and plan on seeing the movie - wait to read it. The movie is absolutely wonderful - and conveys all of the story and more. I totally appreciate the story and am glad I have read it too - but... the film - if you are going to see it - my personal recommendation is wait to read it and try to avoid any spoilers about the movie.

    it's cooold!

Roberta Flack did the original "Killing Me Softly with His Song" (written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox), which the Fugees re-did a few years ago. Rumor has it the "boy" is Don McLean, singer of American Pie, Vincent, and other great songs. Strumming my fate with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with song Telling my whole life With his words, killing me softly With his song I heard he sang a good song I heard he had a sound and So I came to see him, To listen for a while And there he was this young boy A stranger to my eyes Strumming my fate with his fingers...
  13. Actually, I've usually found the white stuff very sticky... <psshsht> Huh? Oh - SNOW.... um... Nevermind...

    hoping for rain

Dang - I thought I knew where Lucy was talking about... until she said "10" colleges... So I looked at their website and ya, they are up to 10 now (9 in 2000, 10 in 2002). I went there in 83-85 when there were only 8

    head hurts

Just be careful Dom - don't date anyone is a fan of yours (which basically would be anyone who has read any of your stories). The internet is just full of fanboi stalkers just looking to get their own trophy author. Next thing you know, they'll be servicing your every need and you won't be able to write anything for the masses anymore... PS. Ever read Misery by Stephen King? <for those who don't know - the above is pure sarcasm... um... ya... that's the word for it>
  23. The story is done and on nifty as DaveScott's link shows. Dan had mentioned moving the whole story here but wanted it to go through an edit process first. But with everything else going on, this is a project that is on hold. I highly recommend the full story - I personally think it's great (though - I'm biased).
  24. At 6am, Melody wakes me up and I let her and Zoe outside to pee (and I usually hit the restroom myself). They immediately come back in and we all go back to bed. Then at 7:30, my alarm goes off around the time Melody again wakes me (sometimes the alarm wins, sometimes Melody). I turn on the comp, put the kettle on for coffee and let them out again while I take a nap on the sofa, waiting for the kettle to boil... then - ahhh caffeine You can understand why a pet door is high on the list of my projects for the new place
  25. I think it is if you are a Hosted Author or a GAC (Gay Authors Committee member) that you can create a blog...
