Five Years of Writing: Reflections

I picked the last stories mentioned in each group because of the quality of the writing. I think it's safe to say that Mark (with the help of his team) has gotten better with practice. Additionally, the twists and turns in Odyssey are inventive, compelling and just make me wait with baited breath for the next installment. Likewise with Paternity we saw a story line and characterizations that compelled readers to comment in record numbers. When that many people take the time to actually comment, it usually means that there is something worth discussing. Bravo and congratulations on your first half-decade of writing and may you do several more! Congratulations to your team as well, especially, Sharon. -
Wow, I came to the party late and the prior reviewers covered my best thoughts on the chapter. With the wedding for Hank and Jeanine set for 9-11 in New York, the whole clan is going to be directly impacted. In other words, it will not be a shared moment via the media, but a direct experience with potentially many in the extended family hurt as well.

Ah-ha, the expected change in point of view and what a treat. The damning correspondence is secure in Davey Jones' locker and Sir Tobias is lost at sea. How dramatic. The bit with the sharks was poetic justice. The attack by the natives is far from resolved and George's pride, his ship is a wreck, albeit a wreck with lots of silver aboard. Poor Humphreys is doomed with the loss of this ship, my guess in the poll as to who reaches London first looks better and better.

Let's see. Elizabeth is in her late eighties and her mother lived beyond a century. Prince Phillip is in his nineties. Charles is in his mid sixties and can plan on at least another 25 years barring any unforeseen event. William is young and can plan on at least 50-60 more years. George is an infant and could be in his sixties or seventies and the crown may not be such a big deal by then. Who can say? And frankly, it isn't like there are not a host of "spares" if the next in line were considered ineligible.

I wonder if Marie will be featured in the chapter detailing JP's announcement? Somehow I don't think Marie is more than a side player in this yarn so I'd be sort of surprised if she took center stage for any length of time. Will will have to deal with her at some point. Whether it's done in front of the whole family or privately and he may just figure a way to do that in way which finally forces her to have some insight into her own problem. Mr. Arbour is good at doing that!

From the discussion including the input from the author I get that it is likely to be sometime before Will settles down with his forever love and that makes sense. Most intelligent people expect that they need to finish their education and get a little experience before they are ready for lifetime commitments. While it is true that life happens and you could meet your soul mate at anytime, most young people are just looking for some happy relationships, not a permanent ball and chain. I picked a "yet unknown protagonist" upon visiting the thread and I just hope Mark continues to write so that I can see that someday. -
Speculating whether or not Granger gets on the Leander is tempting, but I wonder if maybe there will be a break and the point of view will change to one of George's ships racing for London?

Interesting prior comment and response. Regarding the just read chapter 58, I thought the reappearance of Jardines with intelligence about the French was a masterful stroke of storytelling.

Will is a man child, that indeterminate age between 14 to 25, (maybe 28 in some cases). The time when acting mature is usually pretty much an act instead of a habit. Face it, women are better actors and therefore mature earlier. So all this angst about Will's maturity sounds a bit wonky. I am enjoying the story and the learning process he is going through in the context of his time and his generation and his place. Mark likes to write historical novels. This is fairly recent history, but it is a dozen years ago and it is interesting to me and I also suspect to his vast legion of fans. .

Great job as usual as your descriptions of naval engagements are simply wonderful. The hard work of restoring the battle damage and getting the fleet ready to sail is ahead. I think George sleeps alone and quite soundly after that two day long day.

I think Pvt. Tim's post above about Claire raises some valid points. However, based on my reading of the story so far and of Isidore's comments to JP in the current chpater, Marie appears to be a handful for Claire and I somehow get the impression that mommy Claire might have spoiled Marie more than a bit too much over the years and now is suffering the consequences. The dinner party where JP plans to announce the divorce should be fun as I suspect that is only part of it and the real drama will be between Will, Brad and Stef. (Just guessing.)

Another very interesting chapter. It was interesting to see how the dynamic between Will, Hank and Jeanine has improved. JP and Isidore's discussion was revealing and cleared up any confusion about a messy and protracted divorce and division of assets. Stef is still feeling the results of his having blabbed too much as JP continues to tweak him about it. Brad is not having his calls answered by Will and that alone is probably enough to keep him stirred up as well. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Just caught up with this today and wanted to add that I am sorry for your loss. Dogs and cats have been part of the human family as pets for thousands of years for a reason. We love them and they love us. Losing one is hard, but the joy they brought while living is too precious to forego having them in the first place! My advice, wait a bit but look into adopting one from a shelter.

I think Asher's opinion of Ian just sank to a new low. With all of Asher's problems, he really didn't need one of his oldest friends to be fatuous. Well intentioned, harmless banter or just plain mean spirited, Ian has come across as crass. Mike is no angel and is certainly hot tempered. His world is in conflict and he doesn't seem to be able to see a way to set it right. The appearance of Tyler at the door is another occasion for embarrassment at least for Asher, Mike and Tyler so why was he invited? It seems the hosts enjoy tweaking their friend's noses.

Mark Arbour does naval battle scenes so well that you can picture the organized chaos as well as the thrill and the horror all at the same time. As usual I eagerly await the next installment!
