In my latest story, I embedded a video at the end that just won't work right for me. It comes out looking like this: Am I doing something wrong? I usually don't have a problem with this. Behind Green Eyes I did have some fun creating an AI image/avatar of my 13-year-old self. It is a lot cuter than I was, and needed an extra forty pounds, but I couldn't seem to make the AI understand.

prank - Word of the Day - Tue Feb 13, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
Humans aren't the only species that prank each other. Cats are famous for it. -
I want to point out a couple of things about this story people might have missed. In 1975, attitudes were very different. Sodomy laws were still on the books. They were rarely enforced, but when a deputy (aka cop) reads them to a thirteen-year-old who doesn't really know what they're talking about, it scares the hell out of them. Many considered gay people to be criminals and pointed at lawbooks to prove their point. That's why overturning sodomy laws was such a big deal. No redneck cop can frighten children with them because they don't exist anymore. Another point is that not all the adults were villains. Oh, Rainer and Gaddis were. Karma got them. Rainer died of literal ass cancer. Gaddis was arrested for harassing and assaulting a gay black man in the early eighties and did prison time for it. They were on my shit list and I had plans for them, but karma got them first. Sheriff Daniels, as most Sheriff's, was aware of the politics, but he wasn't openly hostile. Ward and Turner were actually helpful. Lastly, anyone who would be in a position to counsel children would do well to remember the principle of Primum non nocere or DO NO HARM.

@chris191070 I go through a 1st person view of this incident in a story called Broken. I wrote it like 20 years ago when I started writing. It's not very good as I was just starting to write. It's here, but you have to page through my stories to find it.

1) @long1joThat's enough, isn't it? 2) @sopocles You missed the part between Coach Ward and the Sheriff. A couple of religious nuts, a scoutmaster and a deputy, thought some of the boys were having sex and gleefully threw them out of the scouts and warned all the parents, so their kids wouldn't catch the ghey. 3) @weinerdog The kid was me. I was there for the whole shit show. I tried to show the shit show from an outside, looking in perspective. 4) @jcdii Yeah, uhhh, consider this a therapy piece.

1975 - Central Mississippi The phone on the district psychologist's desk rang. Kevin Hardin had been given a heads-up, and he was dreading it. Someone had fucked up badly, and now it was his problem. He steeled himself and answered. “Hardin.” “This is Coach Sal Ward, over at Oak Hill. I’m glad I caught you, sir. I’ve got a big problem with one of my seventh graders.” “They told me about the kid you want to talk about. His file is on my desk, and it looks good.” “That was

prank - Word of the Day - Tue Feb 13, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
Pranks can be awful, mean-spirited, cruel, or they can be hilarious. It all depends on the intelligence and creativity of the prankster, and how well they know the prank-ee. Some pranksters can be very artistic about what they do, Here's an example of a prank among a group of friends you may have met in Boyfriends for Christmas. It's a little dirty, so I'm going to put it in a spoiler. -
sartorial - Word of the Day - Mon Feb 12, 2024

My idea of sartorial splendor is Levi 501's and Carhart shirts. If I must go formal, I might wear a Polo shirt with my 501 jeans. -

If it weren't for Stupor Bowl Sunday, I'd give into my ursine tendencies and hibernate through this time of the year. Instead, I'll enjoy the feast. -
Oh, believe me, the utter cluelessness as to how to act in relationships can get so much worse than just screwing around. I had one who shocked me by marring a waman, and was then completely mystified as to why I wouldn't continue seeing him on the side, and was hurt and pissed about it. No one with any self-respect wants to be the side guy... except at a barbecue, where you make the coleslaw and French fries.

novelist - Word of the Day - Sat Feb 10, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
When you are a novelist, there are definite pros and cons. It helps to be obsessive-compulsive, lived a traumatic life, know a bunch of interesting people, and be more sensitive than is good for you. In short, it's the only occupation where mental issues are a big plus. -
As long as Charlie doesn't handle it by locking himself in the basement, drinking a bottle of tequila and listening to Blue Monday on auto-repeat, he'll probably be OK. I don't recommend this method, as I got a surly letter from my liver's lawyer.

When part of one of my stories took place in Australia, I checked in with a real Aussie for a reality check. He helped me get the dialogue right. I do a lot of research on any location I set my stories. I double that when I set a story outside the US, and try to be respectful of those locales and the people who live there. Especially the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand because I genuinely like them. Aussies and Kiwis were here for us after Katrina. We haven't forgotten it.

I have seen xeric recipes for camp food that will last for months. They've been around for centuries. You may have even heard of the hard tack Civil War soldiers lived on.

My Black Dog My black dog is such a bitch, At night, he causes my brain to glitch, Instead of sleep, I relive pain, Shut the fuck up, stupid brain. Why can you not just forget? Why do I have to relive this shit? Like a VCR or high-rez tape, Horror emerges, I cannot escape. PTSD? Situational depression? Useless talk in endless sessions. Occasionally, that mutt bites me hard, It makes me hurt and opens old scars. There ain’t an easy fix to be found, How can I rid myself of this flea-bitten hound? -

If you like cosmic horror (Lovecraftian) you might like The Big Empty. The space between stars is mostly empty... until it's not.

Some of the best writing you'll discover is much like a rope, with its plot threads intertwined to create a stronger, more interesting and complex narrative. Two authors who do this extremely well are @Dabeagle and @Comicality -
landmass -Word of the Day - Sun Feb 4, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
In late August 2005, after Hurricane Katrina flattened and trashed everything in Mississippi south of Hattiesburg, the national media outraged the entire state by calling us "the landmass between New Orleans and Mobile". Some parts of the state didn't get power back until well into October, and there was foul dead fish odor as far north as Memphis for weeks. It was like nothing at all was wrong here if you listened to those national media dipshits. -
