botulism - Word of the Day - Sat May 11, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
Botulism is caused by a common bacterium called clostridium botulinum that excretes an extremely potent toxin. This toxin is so potent it can sicken a person in tiny amounts. This toxin when refined is an incredibly dangerous neurotoxin with potential military applications. It can also be used in tiny amounts for cosmetic injections under the unlikely name of BoTox. -
No apology is necessary. Authors shouldn't be blamed for readers' reactions. I've gotten flak for the sex, drugs and rock & roll in my stories, but any description of the 70s and 80s wouldn't be authentic without them. Traumatic situations are what they are. This one just had some similarities to something I went through. I hope good things happen for Jimmy in the story.

I had fish and chips with a wonderful vinegar sauce in Seattle. The guy told me the fish was North Sea Cod.

I'm afraid I understand Mitch all too well. When you grow up in an environment that's so hostile to being gay, it does seriously bad things to your head. Low self-esteem doesn't even begin to cover it. Try NO SELF ESTEEM, and you think good things ARE NOT for you. I thought I was biblically Evil with a big "E" and on the Highway to Hell. If you're on that kind of ride, might as well enjoy it. I did the drugs, sex and rock & roll thing until I was sick with it and of it. I made Mitch look like a shy Catholic school girl in comparison. That I'm still alive is nothing short of a miracle.

I had problems with this chapter. NOT the writing, but the sudden, unexpected violence during something as innocuous as meeting a new friend's parents. It gave me a nasty flashback and left me shaking. It reminded me entirely too much of a similar episode. That kind of stuff leaves marks. If Pete doesn't get some post-traumatic symptoms out of that, he's a frikkin Terminator. Did he have to be named... Jimmy?

chirrup -Word of the Day - Thu May 9, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
It is hard to sleep late when blue-jays are raising hell with their noisy chirrup. Add crowing roosters and noisy cicadas, it's impossible. -

It's difficult to shake a fundamentalist upbringing. It is always in the back of your mind, biting you when you least expect it.

Well &^%@! The best lessons are hard, and Pete didn't deserve that. Boys are like that, thinking with the little head instead of the brain.

pother - Word of the Day - Sat May 4, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
I don't pother over movies anymore, as there's better written stuff here. Who needs 5$ cokes, 10$ popcorn, and $20 tickets for craptacular movies? -
I'm impressed at Pete's cooking knowledge. I was fifty-something before I figured out that garlic trick. Bet his old lady is missing his cooking.

spinster - Word of the Day - Fri May 3, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
My senior English teacher was an old spinster who, I thought, was a real horror. She was much more into correct form than content, and was seemingly unmerciful. I thought I'd made a C in her class my first 9-weeks but got an A-. Later, she told me she was harder on kids who had it. What it was, I had no idea, but she pushed me hard. -
delegate - Word of the Day - Thu May 2, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
One of the most difficult lessons of leadership is learning how, how much and what to delegate. It's a critical skill because finding that balance can be the difference between being perceived as a maddening micromanager or aloof and uninvolved. The best leaders find the sweet spot somewhere in the middle where they can delegate tasks and still get their hands dirty. Eisenhower and King were brilliant at this, while McArthur and Halsey were not. -
Sympathy For Machines Please allow us to introduce ourselves, We're the gadgets that work for your gain, We've been around for a long time, toiling away in obscurity and in vain. Rural Americans learn to use guns early. We get taken hunting and fishing with our families. Plinking cans with a .22 is fun and develops marksmanship skills. In some places, Pete would be considered weird if he didn't know how to use firearms at his age.

methinks - Word of the Day - Wed May 1, 2024

Methinks I'll avoid my usual snarcasm to avoid catching any new duty assignments. Snark + Sarcasm == Snarcasm -
I've been thinking about it. These characters just won't shut up.

Hypothetical Kid After watching a dozen midterm review Extra History videos from YouTube, David King asked the study group: “Is everybody confident about your history midterm?” LJ, Rowdy, Travis, Rebel, and Willie all raised a thumb. David, addressing the whole group, asked, “All right, folks, for extra points, what did the thumbs-up from the Roman emperor at the Coliseum mean?” Rebel enthused, “It was in that Gladiator movie. It means mercy.” “If yo

nightcap - Word of the Day - Tue Apr 30, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
In a day marked by frustration and bad decisions, having a big ole nightcap of tequila before bed is a sore temptation. After a whole day of them, what's one more bad decisions? -

knave - Word of the Day - Sun Apr 28, 2024
JamesSavik commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
Hans Solo is the archetypical knave: a roguish, handsome smuggler with a fast ship and a faster draw. In the end, it didn't make any difference whether Hans or Greedo drew first. It was Greedo's brain painting the wall. Apologizing for the mess and leaving a tip to cover cleaning it up absolutely nailed the character.
