Is Sexually Explicit Needed In Gay Stories?

You don't have to be really raunchy to set a hot scene. I think it works better to tap into your readers own imagination to fill in details. -
Is Sexually Explicit Needed In Gay Stories?
JamesSavik replied to alex canton's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
I'd say it depends on the story, the characters and whether or not it rings true. I once read a story at Nifty where the characters were all middle school age... and having orgies... and doing things that would make a sailor blush and certainly kill the donkey. This is the point when I hit the back button and move on. There is a lot of playful sex in my story Nightfall. It's not especially graphic- where it really could have been raunchy, it was off camera or left to the imagination. The point wasn't about sex. It was about several young couples (18-21) in love. In some of my other stories it's there but it's specifically part of the plot and not a dirty picture thrown in to keep the guys in the dark glasses and rain coats reading. I'm making drama, not p0rn. There is a difference. -
I want to free you from bondage. How weird is that? I don't want to tie you down. I don't want to smack you with whips. I want to free you. Now if I can just free me.

OK- this may sound rude but- it's really not meant to be. You haven't actually been there so it is something of a theoretical exercise. You need to do research. You need to see it actually happen. You have the perfect excuse to watch gay porn for completely legit reasons. What you'll see isn't what other people will see. What you'll be looking for are inflections, tone of voice and quite a lot of sub-text. To be fair, to some people, it's not at all obvious how this works in a physical sense. Now- here's the distressing part: porn is theater. Most of it isn't even good theater. Porn emphasizes big units, physical contrasts, and pretty, pretty actors. Most of it is type cast: twinks, amateurs, bikers, leather-men, bear & cubs- [and other stuff we will save for the advanced class.] Sometimes if it's really bad, you can tell the actors are coked out of their mind and don't have the first clue about what they are doing. Real sex can be hours and hours of fore play and then a furious act. Or it can be so tender that it moves you to tears. It's never a 20 minute scene from a Hollywood basement or gazebo. That is the real scene that you set as an author. You know your characters. What they will do is a part of their characterization. Unless your character is a sadist, he doesn't want to hurt is partner. Some might like it rough. Others would be horrified at the thought. Will they want to talk dirty? With the wrong guy that an easy way to get punched. Forget the lessons of porn except for maybe how things physically work. Who your characters ARE is what is really important.

One is supposed to have beaten up Senator Harry Reid. It was either the treadmill on the Vegas mafia was showing their displeasure with his work on their part.

I've had this though too. My idea was to put some of Joe Conrad's sea stories into a sci fi setting. I started work on a remake of A Secret Sharer and have notes for the Heart of Darkness. This is... a little ambitious. I found myself reading and re-reading the originals and commentaries and felt a little like the boy who wanted to fly his kite to the moon.

I can run but my knees refuse to participate.

I know this character Silas/Drake. Hell I've been that guy. Anger and paranoia may help you survive but it's like adrenalin in a fight- it will only take you so far.
-
Drake (Silas) reminds me a lot of myself years ago: He's so angry and distrustful that he's pushing everyone away- good, bad and indifferent. He has too. He's in an extremely vulnerable position. If the system gets hold of him... that's not even a pretty thought. I was doing some research for one of my novels and I ran across the Lost Boys of the LDS. Drake/Silas certianly isn't unique. To be as gung ho about family, the LDS sure does ditch a lot of kids. I must confess a certain bias. A character named Rainer in Broken- the real life individual was LDS. You might say he left a lasting impression on me.

Sorry- I couldn't keep him either but for a cute ginger, I'll spring for allergy shots.

When navies build a ship, it's a big expensive deal. Ships are supposed to last decades but many things change over decades. There are engineering improvements and new technologies. Missions expand and more capabilities are required. There is a real danger and, it has happened many times, that multi-million dollar state of the art warships are obsolete before they leave their builders slip. It's called different things by different services. Refit. Modernization. Overhaul. Sailors wouldn't call it a makeover. They just wouldn't. I found myself in need of an overhaul. If it was hardware, that would be easy. The software- now that gets sticky. I needed to feel differently about myself. That's about as difficult as it gets. When you get in a rut, when you feel negative about yourself, you don't expect good things to happen. And they don't. It becomes a perfectly vicious self-fulfilling circle. I needed to make some good things happen. I needed to get back in the habit of success. Where most people screw this particular pooch is to try to do everything at once and don't succeed at any of them. My strategy was to pick a few strategic goals and concentrate on them. Focus on them. Succeed at them. Learn what it takes. I started this plan in Aug. 2014. It's now May 2015. Let's have a look. Goal 1- Improve my physical fitness. Too many people say I'll lose X number of pounds and I'm done. That doesn't work. I need gym time several times a week. Since the project began, I've lost 30 pounds and my body shape has changed. The pounds I didn't lose moved somewhere more useful. I look better, feel better and I'm about as hot as a fifty something guy can get without cheating (steroids or plastic surgery). This will continue. I've discovered that I like people staring at my pecs. Goal 2- Add additional professional/technical skills. I decided to get an Associate degree in Electronics Technology to compliment my degree in computer science. I can do it without mortgaging the future at community college. So far: Digital Electronics A Solid State Electronics A Tested out: DC Electronics and AC Electronics. GPA 4.0 Lesson Learned: It takes a plan to make good things happen. It takes consistent, persistent effort. It takes attention to detail. It takes focus. So far, so good. I'm beginning to believe in myself again.
