Street Words - 3. Chapter 3 A Rent Boy’s Christmas Birthday

span style="font-size:1em;line-height:1.3em;">My first birthday on the street, I turned 16. I'm a Christmas baby.

A Rent Boy’s Christmas Birthday

My first Christmas on the street, I turn sixteen.
Jeff my lover, my pimp, my only friend gives me a gift
Weed and a muffin. He puts in a match. I blow it out.
I bury myself in his arms. Tears I can’t hold.
Don’t want to be brave.
Dinner at the mission. We are so hungry.
After that we walk the street to make our rent.

Another kick to the guts, tim. And you were a kid when you wrote these? You say so much in so few words here. I actually feel what your life was in this poem. You sum up something harsh and brutal in a poignant way. I find myself thankful you had Jeff... your lover, pimp and only friend. Gary.

I wrote these between 16 and 22 ... this one at 16. There's one called Jeff I'll post, that I wrote when I was 23 he was 31. Jeff was hard as nails most of the time, but I know he cared about me in his own way. And me him. Thanks for reading Gary. I appreciate it.

These poems almost makes me cry. To me, it's unthinkable to put a child, my child in anywhere near those circumstances. It breaks my heart to know it happens all too often. Very touching.

It was a hard time. But I hope it will start to happen less often, hope that people will see and accept their kids no matter what. Thank you so much for your comments.

I appreciate them very much.

In spite of unthinkable circumstances, a moment, a pause, a gift, an embrace, tears, love, and a resolve to survive. What giant walks in these teenage shoes.

Hey my friend. Thank you so much. They wouldn't be up there without you and I wouldn't so okay as I am, without you too. Thank you for your friendship and encouragement.

There is a total lack of sentimentality in this poem that shines like diamonds. It's in the other poems as well, but here even though you mention tears, the conclusion makes it clear that those are something that can only be indulged in on special occasions, like Christmas, or a sweet-sixteen….

If you want tears as gifts for all your other birthdays to come, you may have from me. I want you and your husband to never have to shed another one for the past. Only the special occasion ones where both of your eyes fill with tears of joy.

Thank you again for posting an amazing poem.

Jeff and I only had each other and my life was pretty new when I wrote this. No more tears these days not from sadness anyway. Thanks so much for your comments and kind thoughts.

A moment to celebrate, to acknowledge, to mourn what could have been. Then the harsh reality of getting back to 'business'.

Heartbreaking...

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Christmas was hard for sure. Jeff did his best, but it was hard for him. You usually got a little extra cash on Christmas. I worked them every year.

Tim, I'm so happy that you persevered and got off the streets (at one point you must have, since you commented your sad tears are long gone), in one piece. You were in one piece, right?

This was a heartbreaking poem, showing a barely-sixteen-year-old boy crying in the arms of his pimp, using his 'gift', going to the mission for Christmas dinner, and then back to the streets, as Defiance said, back to business.

Been married for going on 6 years. Have been adopted by my hubby's family. They are Ukranian and just sucked me up, so to speak. I have a job and we hope to buy a house soon. I'm happy. Don't feel bad for me.

Thank you so much for caring and reading these. I get the feeling it's hard for you.
