Vignettes - 3. Confession

This chapter is for ColumbusGuy.

For our debut into entertaining after becoming partners two months ago, Ian invited two former college buddies, who in the intervening years had also become a couple. The meal was simple. As the foil-wrapped tenderloin rested in a warm oven, we sat around nibbling appetizers and enjoying a drink. Ian was nursing his usual Cosmo while we sipped a 2006 Brunello, the perfect pairing for tenderloin. A lovely fire banished any winter chill.

It was Shawn who asked. “You guys met a whole year ago? It must have been right after Markey.” I squeezed Ian’s hand to show support. It was a subject he disliked talking, or even thinking, about.

I chuckled. “Those ten months had to be the slowest courtship in human history! I’ll never forget the winter day we first met. Inspired by the illustrations for a book we were about to publish, I had to meet the artist. My co-workers warned Ian would never answer my invitation, but he did.”

Ian interrupted. “Your associates were right. But I received your note on my fourth day of non-stop crying. Needing a diversion, I called your secretary. When I entered your office, I expected some crusty old editor.” Ian was smiling. I squeezed his hand, picking up the story.

“He entered with a gust of winter wind! Cold exuded from this snowman as he unswaddled the scarf from around his head.” I smiled, pausing to sip more of the amazing Brunello.

“Instantly captivated by what anyone could see was an unhappy and emotionally injured soul, I simply had to get to know him. After briefly discussing the illustrations, I invited Ian to lunch. Three Cosmos later, I had learned all I ever needed to know about the snake Markey. By that time I was gone ...completely in love. I was determined to make Ian my forever person. My love only deepened over the year, but I couldn’t convince Ian to take a chance on me. I feared there was too much damage. I slaved to win his trust and love, believe me! It wasn’t easy, not at all.”

Shawn focused on my sweetie. “So Ian, what was the event that changed your mind?” I was interested in his response too. Ian had never explained it to me.

Ian squeezed my hand, smiled, and said, “I had a million worries. Each time Miles alleviated one, my mind moved to the next. Simply put, it took ten months to cross each item off my list. He never needed to convince me to love him. The moment our eyes first met that winter day, I was his. Winter is now my favorite season!”

Okay, now this one is lovely, and we see a side of Ian we haven't met yet. I'd sure like to be invited to dinner at Ian and Miles' house!

Thanks Parker.

I thought I'd use CG's request for how they met to portray Ian as more than the first two chapters painted him. Thank God, right?

Well, SD, at least now we know why Ian is so afraid of having Miles leave him. Over time, I hope we'll see him accepting that his fortunes have changed, and that he'll see the qualities which Miles loves him for.
We all know that it takes love to build a relationship, but is that enough? I think Ian needs more convincing. :)
More please! Plenty of beginners follies to go around which will bring our two closer together.

Thanks CG!

It was probably wise to insert a bit of background at this point. Thanks for suggesting it!

It's so touching and beautiful. On a personal level, I can relate to the winter sentiment perfectly well. It's great to get to know these fellas and their emotional histories a bit more.

Please keep us fed – with wine too…? – on these boys. I'm loving the series!

Ok Ian, I see you. At least part of you, and this explains so much. 'Winter is now my favorite season.' If that wasn't the sweetest sentiment... I look forward to seeing more of these two, and to watching Ian's confidence grow.
Loved it SkinnyD!

When it's unexpected, it's all the more special.
Ian just wanted a distraction from his pain, but found love with a good man instead.
Sweet...

Yep! Both young men have little insecurities to deal with.

They seem to truly love each other though.

Maybe we can help them along :)

Thanks Defiance! You're telling me this little un-story concept is working! The boys are becoming more developed without a story line.

I hope it retains its interest for a while :)

Yes Reader, thank you.

That's so true.

Unexpected and therefore more special happened to me too :)

(sigh)

Now we know why Ian's so insecure - it's all b/c of his asshole ex, Markey.

So sweet that he and Miles fell in love at the same time. :)

Thanks for the review Lisa!

Yes, as is usually the case, behavior betrays cause.

I agree about the initial meeting hitting them each so hard, despite the subsequent year of anguish. Such is so much of life! :)

Very sweet. Nice to see a lil more confident Ian. Loved all the food details. I seem to put food in my work often... glad to see it in yours. Mind you, food and eating are very sexy, sensual things.
Great job.

Thanks Tim!

I completely agree with you about food and wine. It should appear more often than it does!

Two untold stories got unfolded here. They both were lovely. But I can feel for Ian. Past facets leave their marks. It's not easy to get rid of them. Another sweet memory of their life, knowing about their love stories.
