Vignettes - 7. Fear
“Don’t get yourself in such a state!” He was almost chuckling, but it didn’t do anything at all to calm me. He was driving us to introduce me to his mother for gosh sakes! I’ve never been this nervous before in my life ...in my entire life! I’m glad it wasn’t me behind the wheel, or we’d be dead by now for sure.
“I told you how accepting she was when I came out to her at 16! You’re not going to be met by rabid villagers with pitchforks and torches. Relax!” My sweetie was trying, but it wasn’t doing any good. My legs were like jelly and shaking, my fists have been clenched so long they’re white and I think my lunch is on the UP elevator already!
“All she wants to do is get to know you a little. I talk to her about you all the time. She’s really looking forward to this. I guarantee you’ll love my mother’s cooking too. Now take some deep breaths.”
I stared blankly at the passing landscape. I must have hypnotized myself because I lost track of time, but my body was still in fight or flight mode. I became aware of city streets and waiting for signals and stop signs. Then we were waiting at one for an awfully long time when I realized why. He had stopped!! OMG we’re here! OMG OMG OMG!
He had to unbuckle my seatbelt and pull me out of the passenger seat, propelling me toward the long sleepy porch of a very comfortable looking house. All my nervousness vanished in an instant, though, when the front screen door squeaked open and a friendly smile greeted me. She immediately enveloped my body in a warm hug saying, “I finally get to meet you Miles! What a pleasure.”
