Vignettes - 9. Blossom

Tue. December 1

He was pleading, literally begging , to not attend the company’s Christmas Party.

“Don’t be silly, Ian. I’m not going to go without you! They’ll have Cosmos. You’ll be OK.”

“It’ll be terrible! You’ll be surrounded by all your colleagues and I’ll be a wallflower, sucking my drink in the corner! I don’t even know enough to have a simple conversation with book people.”

“You’ll be fine sweetie! Anyway, ‘book people’ are just like everyone else. I’ll tell you what. Let’s go shopping for Christmas party clothes. That’ll make you happy!”

Sat. December 19

I was worriedly searching, holding a glass of Champagne in one hand and a Cosmo in the other.

Franco interrupted my confusion.

“What’s wrong Miles? You look like a scared puppy!”

“I finally got us drinks, but I can’t find Ian.” I sucked in a sob. “He must have left.”

“Oh ...haha no! He’s over there in the middle of that crowd. They’ve all flocked around him. Everyone is enchanted by his irrepressible wit! Where have you been hiding him? You must bring him around more often!”

Tue. December 22

Franco was sitting on the corner of my desk, looking through a folder of illustrations.

“Miles, are you serious? He actually works for us? These are amazing!”

I had to chuckle. “It’s how we met. I saw his work and felt the urge to meet him. He always works from home, even now.”

Franco shook his head. “Damn! His drawings are as effervescent as his personality!”

“It wasn’t always so, believe me! He had been in a nasty relationship and his confidence was somewhere around zero when I first met him. It’s taken quite a while, but between me and a wonderful friend of his, I think Ian’s turned the corner. The Christmas party was the first time I’ve seen him be even remotely comfortable with strangers.”

“Maggie has simply got to meet him. Check your schedules and get back to me. You two must come to our house for dinner.”

Wed. December 23

“I don’t know them from Adam.”

“Didn’t you meet Franco at the party?”

“I can’t remember.”

He does. He’s eager to meet you again. He wants his wife to meet you too.”

“Are you making this up?”

Ian was facing away from me, staring at the calendar on the kitchen wall. I surrounded him with my arms, pressing him into me, gently kissing his ear. “Sweetie, have I ever, even once, lied to you or did anything that would make you feel bad? Ever?”

Ian leaned back and relaxed, finally.

He twirled around in my arms. We met at our lips. The stunning kiss and the glint in his eyes declared my Ian was a new man. I need to call Shawn; share the good news. But not now. Certainly not now. We’re going to be busy for a while. In fact, we’re going to be busy until tomorrow morning.

Everything but us can wait until then.

Only one more in the Ian/Miles series: Celebration. (working title)

Finally, a much needed turnaround for Ian. This was like a payoff... Miles understood from the beginning what Ian needed... such an interesting process you allowed us to watch, Skinny... Well done and cheers... Gary...

I'm so glad you found these again Gary!

Thanks for ALL the reviews. I appreciate that.

I'm going to miss these guys after the final chapter. Maybe I'll find another couple to spy on ...haha

LOL, Gay therapy for our times: "They’ll have Cosmos. You’ll be OK.”

Loved that, and it's right at the beginning too. That's a nice, holiday-spirit type of setting to frame the rest of the story too. It's very effective.

The moment of the kiss – the 'new man' kiss – was just so subtle and beautiful. It's sad to think you are near to wrapping up our peek into their lives, but I look forward to the next installment! Great job!

Aw ...thanks AC!

That IS sort of a gay therapy line, isn't it?

I thought Ian's blossoming needed to be visualized with a kiss. Thanks for noting!

Yay! Ian's blossoming into his old self!! I want to meet his old self! lol

I ditto what AC said about the Cosmos; that line had me lol'ing. :P

I think with the 'new old' Ian, Miles will feel so much better not having to reassure him all the time.

I'll miss these two, Skinny!

Thanks Lisa!

Yep! Ian's back. Poor Miles doesn't know what he's in for ...haha!

I'll miss them too. Maybe they'll drop into other stuff from time to time.

I hate this, SD--that inevitable moment when it's time to say goodbye. Nothing can soften the blow, and we must bid a fond farewell to dear friends. Will we ever see them again? We may hope to do so, but nothing is certain in life. And so, I wish Ian and Miles all the best, and ask them to keep in touch...a fleeting glimpse of them is better than nothing at all.
The key to happiness is communication, guys...learn it, feel it, live it!
Ave atque Val minus one! :)

Haha ...at times it felt like starting a lawn mower, but Miles kept pulling the rope and it finally caught and it looks like he got it purring along!

I think he's in for a fun ride. ;)
