April Musings - 5. NaPoWriMo 2016 - Week Three

Poem #13

Written for Mikiesboy

Loss

Empty sunspot,

Devoid of warmth.

Cooking dinner

With no fear of tripping.

Silence

When the doorbell rings.

Hope

We will meet again one day.

Poem #14

Music of the Barn

Rhythmic footfalls clop a beat –

One two three four

One two three four

Light snorting breathing

On the last,

Head nodding on the first.

Lowing bass joins in,

Followed by baying howl,

And clucking counterpoint.

Tympanic clang of horn on metal,

Signals feeding time.

Poem #15

Cats and dogs are

Raining on my yard,

Puddling their scents

In an effort to claim

What’s mine as theirs.

Renga poem #16 & 17 (we each wrote two stanzas on different days, so I am counting them as two poems)

Valkyrie, Aditus, Mikiesboy and Puppilull proudly present VAMP's first poem:

The bright lights flashing
Obscure the closeness we seek
And leave us blinded

So many words unspoken
Our love in pieces—broken

Words ever whispered
in the dark are seared deeply
into memory.

Haunting echoes of past crimes,

memories of happy times.

Can we open eyes

Gone blind with past transgressions,

Reforming the whole?

Focusing on what we shared

See each other with souls bared.

Please let's try again

Our love is worth fighting for—

Two souls meant to be

Merging those halves of a whole

And twining our shattered soul

Poem #18

I’ve never feared being alone.

Solitude is a comforting fortress.

You can’t be hurt

If you don’t venture out.

I’ve never feared independence,

A luxury of youth.

I’ve never feared being alone.

The company of cats

And occasional men

Has sufficed.

Until now.

Poem #19

Opportunity Lost

One day you’ll be

Ready to run

Into open arms

Instead of away from.

Poem #20

The Cloud Messenger

Roiling blackness angers

The sky’s features

Punctuated by shouts

Of illumination

As the torrent is unleashed.

No 14 really brought me back to the stables of my youth. Feeding time... No 18 is sad. That fortress is deceptive. Sure, it's safe but I think it gets constricting after a while. Trouble is you have to risk yourself to break free. Difficult that...

And VAMP... LOL so much fun to write!

Thanks for the review. VAMP was definitely a lot of fun :) I love that you came up with that name. Very clever :)

Val what a wonderful collection for the week. You touched me deeply by writing something for me. Loss is lovely and I thank you for your love and kindness.
15 is charming and wonderful. The Renga.. was a joy to do…loved working with all of you!
18. I think is brave… you seem to be opening a door.. you’re ready to venture out and grab hold of life. I love it.
I think 19 relates well to 18 and is very good.
20 … oh how wonderful, I can see and feel the storm and thunder and lightening!!
Oh Val this are truly good. You’ve done a wonderful job!

Thanks so much for the kind words. I really appreciate them :) I've lost quite a few pets over the years and have a great deal of empathy for those going through the same thing. I'm glad you liked the poem.

Poem 13. Loss...what a beautiful and touching poem.
Poem 14. Love the barn. I can feel it, hear it, smell it.
Poem 15. Absolutely perfect. What a fantastic set of images!
Poem 16, 17. Awesome product of the group. I really liked it!
Poem 18. The perfect twist in two words...until now. I really resonate with this.
Poem 19. An excellent example of a poem in which less is more. All the untold story weighs on my imagination.
Poem 20. Again, brevity does not mean loss of power or imagery. Loved punctuated by shouts of illumination.

The first spoke to my heart, let me think of those who now roam the eternal hunting grounds. It's dance op de deel in Northern Germany, your barn dance, lots of fun I bet. I loved working with all of you! And for the rest: something is moving, you expressed it so well.

Thank you for sharing those with us. :)

18 and 19 feel like companion pieces. I sense a story behind them. There is a sense of hiding under the afghan, which is followed by exuberant howling at the moon. Very powerful!

There's a longer poem in me right now that is begging for release, and 18 and 19 are snippets of that. I think there's something holding me back from writing it...maybe not wanting to delve too deeply... we'll see how insistent it becomes and if I can get it written this week. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I'm glad you liked them :)

This is a very touching grouping of verse. I like when your emotions take your words by the hand and lead you. Particularly beautiful, I feel, is the poems written for Tim's loss. The image of not needing to look where I walk in the kitchen gets me every time.

Bravo!

Thanks so much, AC :) I credit you with pushing me to better my poetry and I really appreciate you taking the time to review them all before I posted them. I'm glad that you liked this batch. :)
