April Musings - 11. NaPoWriMo 2017 Week One

Day 1

Ruins

Stone towers lie recumbent

No longer reaching

For blue, but consumed by green.

Day 2

“Careful ties his hat on…” prompt. Write a series of short stanzas that personify adjectives or abstract nouns.

Awkward stands in the corner, wringing his hands instead of mingling.

Confused thinks Sarcasm is cruel.

Careless forgets that words have power.

Grief mourns the loss of friendship.

Day 3

Circular Reasoning

The premise is supported by

the proposition we supply,

X is true because of Y.

Y is true because of X,

Lowered heads, much perplexed.

Day 4

More "Careful ties his hat on…" lines

Patient smiles politely as Clueless prattles on.

Fate locks eyes across the room, his sentence abandoned mid-thought.

Expectation drums his fingers, disappointed he was not met.

Wonder stares wide-eyed at Fate.

Truth careens around the room like a drunkard, causing sobriety with each slam.

Day 5

Prompt: “Looking for Words” Write a poem about words.

Uninspired

Words lay frozen

beneath the surface

like fish in winter

waiting to be caught

and consigned to paper

Day 6

Prompt: “Field Guides” Let your poem tell of a small, resonating memory of a moment’s observation of the natural world. The suggested form was a Haiku.

Happy Place

Multi-hued valley

Visible breath, pounding hearts

Two legs astride four

A huge thank-you to Aditus and Parker Owens.  Their input made this selection better than I could make them on my own. :)  Bet you can't guess which poem Parker inspired... :gikkle:

:gikkle:  I think Parker's nefarious plot is to infect all of us on GA with math... :puke::gikkle:  Thanks for the comments, tim.  I'm glad you liked the 'Careful' prompts.  I had a lot of fun with those. :)

Of course, I loved Circular Reasoning, as it is a rare bivariate poem. I am entranced by both 'careful' inspirations, as they are quite marvelous characterizations. Uninspired and Happy Place display your elegant and careful use of words. Masterfully done.

Nope, I totally can't.

A great start Val! My favorite, although this was difficult to decide, is 'Happy Place'.

The haikus are marvelous. I agree that the 'Careful' poems are exceptional. You personified the abstract nouns perfectly. I could "see" their movements and interactions with one another. "Truth careens around the room like a drunkard, causing sobriety with each slam." Love it. And your 'Happy Place' haiku took me right to a similar happy place. Thank you for sharing these, Val, I love them all.  Cheers - Mac

OK. Here I wanted to give a separate review/comment for each of your poem.

  1.  Reverse Haiku: I am flattered. The first and my favourite poem of this collection. I loved the form and your poem shone with beautiful image. As I said before,  poetry will make shine anything; even the ruins. I loved the greenery surrounded. A perfect image.
  2. 'Careful' prompt: Both the second and forth poems of your's reminds me the craziness I have felt when I was writing one for the prompt. I can say you got fond of the prompt, so does I. Your creation of new characters and characterising them with the real meanings have the perfect hit. I loved them both.
  3. Circular Reasoning: OK. I am not rolling my eyes here. I can say,  both Parker and Drew have enjoyed this poem a lot. You were about the circular thingy even though you have used maths to explain that to us. Lovely poem as well.
  4. Words prompt: Wow. That's definitely nice take on words. I loved the fish thingy you have compared words with. Exactly leading to their destination. The paper. Such a wonderful poem. Loved it too.
  5. Haiku: A clear image that you had portrayed. But if I had to put on my teacher's hat,  yeah I have stole Benus hat for the purpose, you should be careful with what you see or what you feel seeing it. You can't see those pounding hearts of those two. But I liked the description of two legs astride the four. Clear image. You have nicely on this. I am not considering the small thing, because I love the last line much more.

Over all, it's a nice journey of six days and six poems. Congratulations on them and good luck and all the best for the remaining. Well done Val. :)

Thanks so much for the high praise, Mac. :blushing::hug:  I had a lot of fun with the 'Careful' prompt.  I'm glad you could relate to my happy place. :)
