NaPoWriMo - 5. Days 22 to 30

The final push to finish 30 days of poetry

Day 22

At Rest

Plaintive gulls dipped and swooped while geese honked in vee’s

A lone loon swam, diving into the slate lake, made grey by clouds

We sat in peaceful silence watching the loon plunge, as the

Sun’s rays slid between pushy clouds and fog skipped over the sand

Michael reached over, his hand on my shoulder, I smile at him

We walk along the boardwalk, enjoying the quiet and the dogs

Between us, our pup’s ashes, we are one now—a family at peace.

Day 23

In the morning I wake and listen to you breathing

I sigh as your arm slips over my waist

You pull me close, your lips on my neck—I feel your desire

I give over to your caresses—still your boy

Day 24

It had been so long since I’d seen you

But you looked exactly the same

Dressed in your favourite polka-dot dress

Hair done the same way

I didn’t know why you’d come to me

As dreams I rarely recall

But there you are smiling and speaking

Though I cannot hear your words

Why that week it was important

Later became apparent

“They only come when you need them.’

I needed you more than I realized

I think you came to tell me

That it was time for Ripley to go

You were ready to look after him

And still looking after me

Day 25

I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that begins with a line from a another poem (not necessarily the first one), but then goes elsewhere with it. This will work best if you just start with a line of poetry you remember, but without looking up the whole original poem. (Or, find a poem that you haven’t read before and then use a line that interests you).

And miles to go before I sleep

There is not time for my weeping

What matters is the journey’s end

I’m in no hurry to reach it

For the end is just that—an end

Preferred by most is the slow road

instead the unfettered highway

That sends us racing to demise

Refuse to fly to the finish

Take your time and savour it all

We have just one dance, one life

Don't be in a rush to waste it

Day 26

I’m feeling it

Feel it coming

Anger and deep sadness

Frustration and self-hate

Self-pity I hate even more

Why—why—why—why?

Maybe it’s time to take up embroidery.

Day 27

What am I,

can you see?

I feel transparent

A ghost of me.

Waste of space

And of time

Definitely not sublime

Day 28 - A little nonsense!

There once was a woman named Rita

Who wanted to be a Peter

She said let me out

I have zero doubt

I’m Peter, it’s nice to meetcha!

Day 29

Can there be too much poetry?

Yes indeedy, can’t you see

On and on I write these lines

And some are actually fine.

But much of it is so much junk

Nothing I’d pack in a trunk.

For some poor soul from the future

To read and say, ‘That was culture?’

Day 30 Oh my God! Oh.. this challenge was an exercise let me tell you!! But this is the last one....i make no promises for this one...

Did you ever see a bumble bee

Buzzing round the garden

Am I scared, oh no not me

I threw away my caution

They work all day endlessly

Climbing through the flowers

On weary wings they seem clumsy

But are as cheery as a jester

In the end their toil is fruitless

As their honey we harvest

And it’s absolutely scrumptious

Bumble bees are the greatest!

Thanks to all you brave souls who read all of my poems ... many of dubious quality!

Day 22. You describe the scene perfectly, so that I can hear the gulls and watch the loons on the water. ...sun slid between pushy clouds...that's a wonderfully inspired image.

Day 23. Warmth, peace, contentment: to be loved like that is the greatest blessing.

Day 24. Your vivid dream, lucidly described. And it's message, so clear - not all dreams are clear, so this is a gift.

Day 25. What a great line to begin with...and miles to go...please don't contemplate your final sleep too soon, as this is an eloquent plea to live life slowly and delectably.

Day 26. I empathize with this one, know exactly what it talks about. You speak to me here.

Day 27. As with 26, this poem talks to my experience.

Day 28. Love this lighthearted piece. Your limerick is an antidote to 26 and 27.

Day 29. Too much poetry?? How is that possible? But I understand the sentiment you raise...the feeling of 'what more can I say?' Sometimes gets to me.

Day 30. At an end, perhaps, but worth it, this poem shows why the month of toil makes such a difference. To me, this is a wonderful piece describing the beauty in the natural and everyday experience. It contemplates beauty in the simple, ordinary bits of life.

Congratulations on 30 days of poetry... I won't dissect them... it sometimes affects the impact for me... I rather say that throughout, you left me with images that moved me, made me chuckle, made me cry, and helped change my moods. I liked all of these. You make no bones of what they were... a finish of sorts... but still their impact held true... your mom, Ripley between you and Michael... I felt the closure, which may not last, but still... and embroidery? Humor in a dark moment is often the best medicine... kudos on your fine achievement, and I'm sure for all its work, it was fun... cheers, my friend... Gary....

I agree about dissecting them.. i think poetry is personal and frankly I cant always tell you how it makes me feel. Lol embroidery...sometimes i feel i'm such a bad writer. It was fun doing this, and I'm glad I decided to do it. Thanks for reading them Gary-a challenge all its own.

You ran me through the gamut of emotions with this batch. Your poems about Ripley are so moving and brought tears to my eyes. I can really relate to the one about self-doubt. I liked the humor you injected, although I have to disagree about bees. I'm terrified of the stingy little monsters. lol Congrats on completing the month. It's a great accomplishment and I'm so glad you participated. :)

Hey tim
I enjoyed reading about the memories expressed in your poems - very life and other-life affirming they were.
It seems like just yesterday it was day one. That day is long gone on this journey you undertook with much success. The finish was excellent and you have more than earned the right to rest on your laurels.
Feel free to throw us a crumb now and then, will you?
As always, nicely done.

Thanks Val. It was a good month, even in the face of the loss and sadness. You can disagree about bees, we need them though losing them doesnt bear thinking about. Thanks for the forum.. it was a great experience! Thanks for all of your support and friendship, too!!

The poem where you and Mike are sitting with Ripley's ashes really got to me. Of course, I haven't stopped crying from the last batch of poems, so it wasn't hard to do!

Then of course Rita/Peter made me laugh, so thank you for that!

This was an awesome collection of poems, Tim. I said it earlier, but I'll say it again: you certainly have a talent for poetry -- and no, there can never be too much poetry! :)

Lisa thank for all of your lovely reviews. Glad a few of these made you laugh. I'll never forget that moment at the beach with Mike after we'd picked up Ripley's ashes. It was such a beautiful peaceful time. Thanks again!
