NaPoWriMo - 4. Days 15 to 21

Some sad poems about my pup dying and some happier stuff to.

Day 15 Haiku for the VAMP Renga.

Please let's try again

Our love is worth fighting for—

Two souls meant to be

Day 16

Huddled, I sit in my chair

Crying alone

My head aches and I’m hurting

Just so tired

We are on death watch

How much longer

It’s so hard to die, to let go

A friend told me

My sweet puppy dog

God I love you

I don’t want to say goodbye

To prove my love—I must

I leak pain from my eyes

And my mouth

My heart keens for you

As you leave me for the last time.

My home is empty today

Our cherished boy is gone

Memory of him not far away

He passed away just before dawn

Day 17

I liked the idea of writing a prayer… so wrote this for us and Ripley.

A Prayer for Ripley

Lord listen to my weeping heart

The time had come for us to part

Keep him safe in heaven above

Lots of bones and plenty of love

Pure and simple is the love of a dog

Ours deserves a special epilogue

He taught me love, acceptance and joy

Ripley was our very best boy.

I miss his spirit, his was great

In his world, there was no hate

He lived now and loved his people

Ripley will be a terrific angel.

Please ignore his naughty moments

And don’t forget the fire hydrants

Give him lots of jobs and things

So he can earn his angel wings.

So my lovely darling pup

Our time here isn’t yet up

Your spirit now is beyond our ken

But I know that we’ll meet again.

Day 18

My grief felt like a suit of mail

Tears were mere moments away

My heart feels much calmer now

I’m feeling much lighter today

Day 19

I turn over the brown rich soil

Warmed by the afternoon sun

Add fertilizer, water and seeds

Wait for natures work to be done

I have mint, parsley, basil and thyme

And soon tender shoots appear

I sit down and watch my bounty grow

And drink myself a beer

Day 20

Baker Boy

I woke up that morning with a mission in mind

To bake Mum a cake, it was her day to celebrate

Peeking through the curtains, it was still dark

No matter, I thought and I crept down the stairs

I entered the kitchen, spic and span and shining

Clattered bowls and utensils onto the counter

Flour, soda, sugar, chocolate—I mix and pour into the pan

Into the oven, I forgot to preheat, so thirty minutes it is!

The living room clock chimes out seven bells

One look at the kitchen and I know what to do

I fill up the sink and clean up the small mess

So Mum will be pleased and won’t have to!

Soon the smell of chocolate fills the air

Carefully reaching in I press on one layer

It springs back just like Mum had taught

With mitts, they come out—to cool

Then Mum’s in the doorway smiling at me

She hugged me tight and said ‘What you doing?’

I quietly said, ‘Oh just bakin, you know.

I wanted to say, Happy Birthday.’

Day 21

Loving Tinkerbell

I watch her flit and fly all around

She thinks a lot of herself I’m sure

It’s all Peter this and The Pan that

That Fairy is becoming a bore!

She’s blind as a bat and not as smart

Dreaming that The Pan loves her only

I'd love to be on the shelf that day

When the cad breaks her sweet Fairy heart

What's wrong with a kind Fairy like me?

That Pan's not any better than I!

Well all I can do, is be here to

Hold her hand and be the better guy.

Some sad poems about my pup dying and some happier stuff to.

Nice selection of poems, Tim. Your tributes to Ripley are very touching. I liked the one about planting the garden then enjoying a beer. I'm also glad I'm not the only one that finds Tinkerbell annoying... lol Nice job :)

Your set of poems to Ripley climbed through your stages in a loving way that felt so nice. I appreciated the poem highlighting rebirth of planting followed that set. Well done, tim!

Fearless frenzy of morning in the kitchen! The flour is still in the air around me. :gikkle:

Hidden jealousy of Tinkerbell? :o

A very enjoyable week of poetry tim!

All of these were well done, as usual, but I think my favourites were A Prayer for Ripley and Baker Boy. I loved the lines "Please ignore his naughty moments. And don’t forget the fire hydrants" They made me smile and remember my girl.
As I read Baker Boy I picture a young tim, working hard to make his mom a birthday cake, with smudged of chocolate on your cheeks :)

Such an innocence to Baker Boy... it made me smile, and made me tear up... good tears... I used to do things like that for my mom (put vinegar in fudge once... nasty). Ripley's Prayer, I already read before, but it was still a powerful tribute that brought up more memories... loved them all, tim... and aren't you actually the Peter Pan? :) . Cheers, my friend... Gary....

Day 15. Loved the VAMP poem! Great idea!
Day 16. I just want to hug you and support you.
Day 17. I grieve with you in this.
Day 18. Love the image of feeling lighter.
Day 19. New plants, new shoots, new life. Great and hopeful thoughts.
Day 20. This had me smiling from the very beginning, and grinning all through. I remember my own baker's children, and you capture it perfectly.
Day 21. Poor fairy pining after Tink. What an interesting POV.

I think those two are my favourites as well, LL. They are the most personal and real. Well...im not the neatest in the kitchen. Thanks for reading and your comments.

Thanks skinny! A rough week but writing about ripley helped. Me? Jealous of a fairy? Never! I'm still a bit messy in the kitchen, but Mike cleans up usually. Thanks for reading my friend! I appreciate it.

Hey tim

Really quite late with this review. I had started it before, but it wasn't coming out right. After reading it again, my thoughts are less cloudy. I loved the poems for Ripley. Even in the sadness for his loss or maybe because of it, the love felt for that furry little being is strong and true. What a lucky boy he was to have you and Mike be his people.
Planting the seeds - so serious it seems. Having a beer - felt like your thought did a 180, I know mine did. :)
As for Tinkerbell, what did she ever do to you? Then again, I guess she is like a fly buzzing around, eh? lol
As always, nicely done,

Thanks Reader. Ripley's sudden illness and our needing to make that last choice for him was hard. And while we can talk and laugh about him now, thinking about his last moments is still hard. Writing to and about him helped me cope. And Tinkerbell. she did nothing, the prompt was to write about a famous character from another unfamous characters POV. Just a bit of fun. Thanks so much for all of your support of me and my poems. Thanks again, tim xo

As shining and emotional as the mourning poems are, it's the one about your mother that gets me the most. Perhaps it's because of the context of loss, idk, but in any event, it's touching.

They are all beautiful. I know I am not alone on GA; we're grateful you decided to share your talents with us.

Thank you!

Ripley was very lucky to have you and Mike as his owners. I felt how much you loved him through your words in the poem. Brought back lots of sad memories as the first anniversary of my Jessie's death is looming ahead (Halloween morning).
