The Seasons of My Life - 1. Chapter 1: The Seasons of My Life
The seasons of my life began the day I was born
And I had no control over the early days of spring
I was totally dependent on my parents, especially my mom
She’d dress, bathe, and feed me, and put me to bed at night
The middle of spring was spent in two basic activities
Learning to walk and talk, and then I started school
This gave me a small amount of freedom, since I rode on a bus
And my time was spent in class and having fun with my friends
Summer began when I became an adult and got a job
And a little later I also got married and started a family
My freedom now had some limitations, due to my wife and kids
But I didn’t mind at all, since they were so very important to me
I still had time to have fun, but a different type of fun
It was family fun, along with a multitude of memories
There were plays, concerts, sporting events, and weekend trips
Along with the family vacations that still bring a smile to my face
Fall began when I turned fifty and the kids left home
It took a while before I got used to them being gone
But then there were weddings to attend and grandkids being born
And that brought a new sense of joy and more activities to attend
It was during this time that I also started to slow down
I began to walk a little slower and didn’t run as much
My body began to change in ways that I wasn’t prepared to accept
And my hair slowly began to turn white before most of it fell out
I have since retired and entered the winter of my life
These days, I feel as if my old friends are dropping like flies
And I have no idea whether the winter is going to be long or short
But just know this before I go, the seasons of my life have all been worth it
