The Seasons of My Life - 1. Chapter 1: The Seasons of My Life

The seasons of my life began the day I was born
And I had no control over the early days of spring
I was totally dependent on my parents, especially my mom
She’d dress, bathe, and feed me, and put me to bed at night

The middle of spring was spent in two basic activities
Learning to walk and talk, and then I started school
This gave me a small amount of freedom, since I rode on a bus
And my time was spent in class and having fun with my friends

Summer began when I became an adult and got a job
And a little later I also got married and started a family
My freedom now had some limitations, due to my wife and kids
But I didn’t mind at all, since they were so very important to me

I still had time to have fun, but a different type of fun
It was family fun, along with a multitude of memories
There were plays, concerts, sporting events, and weekend trips
Along with the family vacations that still bring a smile to my face

Fall began when I turned fifty and the kids left home
It took a while before I got used to them being gone
But then there were weddings to attend and grandkids being born
And that brought a new sense of joy and more activities to attend

It was during this time that I also started to slow down
I began to walk a little slower and didn’t run as much
My body began to change in ways that I wasn’t prepared to accept
And my hair slowly began to turn white before most of it fell out

I have since retired and entered the winter of my life
These days, I feel as if my old friends are dropping like flies
And I have no idea whether the winter is going to be long or short
But just know this before I go, the seasons of my life have all been worth it

We share the same age and those seasons speak loudly!  I agree - may the winter be long and full of joy.

Thanks for responding Harry, and I think we all harbor a little Peter Pan in us.

A look back at our youth, middle age, and a look ahead to what is coming and finally the end.  An honest prose that allows us all to remember and look forward to what is coming.

Yes, and although it was written by an old man looking backward, it will also give younger readers a chance to look both backwards and forwards.  We humans are all mortal.  Thank you for reading and commenting on my humble poem.

Don't worry about winter, just move to Wisconsin, winter lasts all year here. No harm no foul 😝😝😝😝 great way to cheat the system. 😝😝😝

All serious though, great work. The pride of a life well lived, and the strength of contentment definitely comes through.

I'm not worried about winter, but I've been to Wisconsin, but in June and didn't see any snow.

And thank you for the wonderful comments about my entry to the Poetry Anthology.  I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Thank you for responding, Adi, but I think my winter will depend more on my medical issues than what I might want.

There was no snow in June? I'm guessing it was southern wisconsin or a fluke year then 😝😝😝

At least on the plus side, no matter how long your personal winter is your art is definitely leaving a mark that I hope lasts through at least the next generation.

Here's hoping we both get long winters, Bill. I'm glad your seasons were fulfilling... thank you for sharing. Mine have been fulfilling too... challenging at times, but worth the trek through all the pitfalls. My kids are my world, and I'm good with that. Your poem made me quite reflective, and you can't ask for more than that from a reader. Well done, sir. Cheers!

Thank you for the kind words, Gary, and thanks for reading my poem.  I hope we all enjoy lengthy and enjoyable winters.  I don't how old you r children are, but if they're young enjoy those precious moments with them, and if they're older I hope they remember the lessons you taught them along the way.  I'm glad it gave you pause to reflect up your own life.
