Doing It Again - NaPoWriMo April 2024 - 1. Chapter 1

Poems from April 1 to 6. I've used some prompts and noted the prompt and any requirements.

1: No prompt, just woke up with a bad headache on this day.

It's gray again like a fungus and
it eats into my peace and sanity
like bacteria
like the faceless chewer in my
dreams
my head aches and eyes throb
will I ever wake pain free?
seems like that’s not for me
don’t mention it don’t complain
don’t become him again
be honest and tell the truth
yes tell it but just not that
take some drugs, yes take
your meds, add a painkiller
what’s a few more to your
already broken liver
At least you’re not yellow…yet
laugh about it like it don’ matter
it don’t as long as you keep it
keep it hidden away from the day
My pockets are too shallow to hold it
so thoughts drown the peace I knew
and they circle the drain like hope

2: Prompt: remember an argument

We are different you and me
there’s no blood between us
a nephew, but more a son
and you hurt me like we’re related
after that argument, I’m wounded still
do I wait?
I’m afraid it will be forever

3: Prompt: Include the following words: terrain, flowerpot, hoisted, drafts
Also:

  • Include a geographical feature

  • Include a childhood memory

  • Mention an aspect of agriculture or farming

Below the cliffs lie tilled fields
golden now with winter’s wheat
where once we hoisted sheaves
walking them over the soft terrain

Nearby, the old house where
uncles played drafts on the porch
a clay flowerpot tipped and broken
where tenacious red geraniums still grow

4: Prompt: Cicadas (supposedly getting double of them this year)

You’re louder than any factory
you create quite the buzz
while looking for a face
only a mother could love

5: Prompt: Time and writing

Each day I awaken
firm in my belief
I will write this day
Such a joker am I
I so willingly lie
and dream
I set aside minutes and then
while away hours, having
done nothing
I slope into slumber with
the same lie on my lips

6: Prompt: God

Growing up, I feared God
an angry father who expected perfection from his children
I questioned this when old enough to divine
humans cannot be perfect, will effort be enough?
Or must we reach it to find a home in heaven?

A wonderful set.

The first one reminded me of how I feel when I have a headache. With so much medication taken daily, I hate it when I need to take more pills.

The others I loved. Thanks for these tim x

No thinking cap required for these.

1. The icky days suck.

2. Family... blood related or not can be so damn frustrating. But it's his move.

3. I've never been great with being told what to read or write. I've tried usibg prompts and crashed and burned every time. You've got a better grasp on it than me.

4. 🤣🤣

5. Procrastination should've been my first name, not middle. Good for you for pushing past it.

6. You already know my views on the concept of a higher power.

Nice job with all of these. Cicadas was my favorite.. I can't count the number of times I heard "that's a face only a mother could love" whenever I broke out the tears as a kid. 😂

Below the cliffs lie tilled fields
golden now with winter’s wheat

This is beautiful...

a clay flowerpot tipped and broken
where tenacious red geraniums still grow

This is very vivid and captures the scene for me ..

And prompt 5. Very well done.  I especially like this:

I set aside minutes and then
while away hours, having
done nothing
I slope into slumber with
the same lie on my lips

These are an excellent start!

i'm glad you can relate to the first poem, but i'm also sorry you can. These headaches are truly awful. xo Thank you for reading them all, chris.

Thank you for reading, k.  Aw, sorry for the memories, but that line is so true of cicadas. They have a kind of pretty name, but the rest of them.. mmm not so much.

Don't feel bad.. they're funny memories now. My brothers loved to get me riled up when I was little. It was their mission to see how long it would take before I had a meltdown. (Not long btw). Of course they did it when mom and dad weren't around.

I have no regrets when I get in a good zinger, especially with my middle brother.. lol.

Excellent beginning!  My thoughts about number 6, God:  As I've grown older and studied other "religions"/spiritual traditions, I have come to believe that the angry, vengeful, judging God as described in what Christians call the Old Testament is definitely not the God described by Jesus in the New Testament (nor the one described by Paul in his Epistles).  Whatever Being means in its purest form is what I believe in as a higher power.  Our finite brains cannot comprehend fully but can touch briefly Being via music, poetry, great literature and art, dance, meditation...  If I had to believe in the angry, vengeful God that expects perfection, I wouldn't believe either!

I'm glad you've found that. I agree with you. There is a guy on YouTube who is an ex-rodeo rider turned preacher. He gentles horses while talking about love and Jesus. I am still trying to determine if I believe, but I like him very much and his message. Here's a link if you're interested.
