Stanton Drew - 1. Stanton Drew
The old gods didn’t disappear,
they’re still observing,
occasionally shaking their antlers,
and stamping a hoof, snorting displeasure at the state of the world.
Or raining down their sorrow, filling flood plains with remorse.
The observant may catch a fleeting glimpse
in a hedgerow or on a moor.
Breezy breath whispering words not understood.
Ephemeral fingers brushing quivering skin,
speaking to their descendants on a cellular level,
hoping they’ll listen before it’s too late.
Stanton Drew is a place in southwest England comprised of a series of standing stones. I visited there two years ago, and it was a profound experience. Thank you to Aditus for helping me refine this poem. You rock, Wolfie!
