Loving Fiercely: How I Resist - 12. Chapter 12: Running Around in Circles

NOTE: This piece talks explicitly about rape.
This piece references an assault I experienced in August 2017 and my grappling with its aftermath.

I’m running around in circles

Trying not to give in

I fear you’ve got the best of me

I fear that you will win

My body reduced to empty

A result of your theft

Yet it is weighed down heavily

From the load that you left

A vile memory of the past

The horror and the dread.

But if the moment is over

Why are you in my head?

Life has taken a new design

I feel trapped in a chest

My world has shrunken much smaller

Am I under arrest?

I fight with unparalleled might

Say “I’m magic, I’m stone”

These chains do little to restrain

The great strength that I hone

"I am power and I am fire"

I live to rise above

Your attempt to smother my will

Elevates my resolve

When it all seemed over and done

And the dust had settle

You see me raise my fists again

Demanding my medal

Were you expecting my defeat?

I aim to be higher

Behold the product of my ire

You face a survivor

It’s only a matter of time

And I await the day

When you’ll be a thing of the past

And the past you will stay

Thank you for bearing witness.

Yes, strength is shown here. More later... But well done, on so many levels.

It pains me B, knowing you're fighting this. So absolutely beautifully written and expressed. The love reaction is not for the content, but your fighting spirit. Don't ever let go of that baby! ❤️

That really means a lot. It's nice to put into words what I've been experiencing and I'm happy that I have others to share it with. Thanks for keeping me motivated :).

I admire how you chose a structured, lyrical form for this poem. The message could have been done in free-verse, but the reason why to use it is illustrated here. We as poets might chose one form over another, and stick with its discipline, because it offers freedom. To do what you have done here is also an act of bravery.

As for the content of the poem, hugs and keep fighting. You are stronger than any advisory :)
