Beautiful, reminds me of my childhood.

I too had that kind of dreams but I realized that my skills were very limited ! 😬

Thank you, Chris.  I'm not much of a poet, but I'm glad my feeble effort brought back some good memories.

Thank you for the feedback, Danilo.  As I told Chris, I'm not much of a poet, but your Spock/McCoy analysis is very apropro. 
I'm sorry that you weren't able to follow your dreams, but I hope you've had a very enjoyable and successful life. 

Wonderful verses and advice.  My saddest experience in working with teens for so many years as a counselor was with those who dared not dream because life had already knocked them down very hard in their short lives  Lack of encouragement from their living circumstances, social pressures due to either overt or "unconscious" racism, and other pressures led to lack of involvement in education which, in turn, further hindered them.   Would that we had the ability to inspire dreams.

That's a wonderful commentary on how dreams mature, eventually envisioning possibilities in the unknown future, and then doing one's best in the realities in which one finds oneself.  Thanks for your contribution to the anthology - and to the exploration of dreams.

Thank you, Tony, and what you've stated is so true.  We must always dare to dream, no matter how difficult life has been or how many times we've faced unbearable obstacles.  Life would be very bleak without dreams and the dreamers.

Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed my effort and the message it delivered.  As I was writing it, I kept thinking of the late basketball coach Jimmy Valvano.  When he was dealing with cancer, he made a speech where he said, "Don't give up.  Don't ever give up!"  That applies to your dreams as well and not only when you're fighting an illness.  I hope this helps to inspire someone to take another look at their dreams.  

Having lived and grown up across the wrong side of the tracks, from the 'right' side of town, I was very fortunate to have had mentors throughout all my schooling and employment. I was fortunate to find employment that encouraged me, starting at the very bottom/entry level and ending up on the executive floor with a corner office!!!!

And I found the following so very frigging true...

This may just be another one of my fantasies, but I hope I have proved a point:
Explore your childhood fantasies and someday one of them may also be fulfilled.
Don’t give up or listen to the bullies and naysayers that enjoy crushing dreams:
Just do everything that you can and possibly your dreams may also come true.

As I read your poem, I also remembered my dreams of childhood and early twenties.  I too wanted to be an astronaut, then later I dreamed of being Indiana Jones looking for the lost treasures of the past.  As I matured I built on those dreams by learning about science and history in college.  My job however was as a teacher.  Started out in elementary school and then middles school to teach my students to love science and understand the improtance of history.  I love the message of this poem and thank you for the beautiful words that are so positive.

Then in a way your dreams have come true, because you're now passing them along to younger generation.  Teaching is a noble profession, even if teachers are underpaid and under attack at times, so make sure you help your students keep their dreams alive.  And I also want to thank you for the wonderful review you posted for this poem.  To be honest, I had my doubts about posting this poem, since I'm not a poet and I don't know very much about writing poetry, so I'm amazed by the wonderful response I've had to it.  

Too often dreams are crushed by the twin whims of jealousy and spite. The haters, like the kind you mentioned in the poem, were hurt when young, so they think it natural to turn around and hate on others.

When will we advance as a species if this "pass the thump along" attitude remains? (The thump quote is ripped off from Melville's White-Jacket)

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, but I agree with you completely.  We have to stop the hate, the bullying, the thumping, and harassment of young people so we don't crush their spirits and their dreams.  It's important that they never give up.  

Who are we without our imaginations? How do we decide what road to travel, what makes us tick, or what holds our interest? We learn so much through escaping into fantastical worlds... and sometimes it is the only place we can feel truly safe. We can feel powerful, be heroes, control outcomes... it is empowering. I adored this poetic offering, Bill. We all have to grow up, but it doesn't mean we can't let our child's minds free every once in a while. I travelled this poem, and I battled demons and saved worlds along with you. Thanks for taking me back in time. We, you and I, and other authors, are all these things. We create characters and we give them adventures, and we make the world a better place, even if just for the time it takes a reader to consume a few pages. I am a doctor, I am a cowboy, I am Santa Claus...heck, I am even a wolf... and I wouldn't have it any other way. Just beautiful, and I thank you for the inspiration you provide. Cheers! Gary.

Thank you, Gary, and I'm glad you agree with me on this.  As Eleanor Roosevelt one said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."  It's important to have dreams, even if we're unable to make them reality.
