This is an intriguing look at a very dark period for the gay population, one that older readers can identify with and younger readers can gain a better appreciation for what the elder gay generations endured.  However, this story is not all about the dark times and shows the growth and emergence of a gay person with a vision and a goal, one where he worked very hard to attain success and fulfillment, while also navigating those rocky waters .

Not an easy read for those who were already adults in the 80’s. It is described by the author as “autobiographical”, but raises questions as to whether this is a literary device or a factual account.  Regardless, it shows the worst and best of humanity in the worst days of the AIDS pandemic.

For younger readers, this might in the PREP generation seem ancient history but as one report I read estimates that 25% of men on the gay scene in London are HIV+, perhaps there is a relevance here for all.

“Yet, I miraculously traversed a literal minefield of despair and devastation, emerging on the other side with my story to tell.”
