Six Months of Silence - 5. Chapter 5

Friday morning was cold, damp, and utterly miserable.

Mark sat stiffly in the passenger seat of his father's sedan, staring out the rain-streaked window at the main entrance of his high school. The principal, Timothy Vance, had called Mark's parents late Thursday evening. Zero tolerance for physical violence on school grounds. That was the rule.

"Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is, Mark?" his father, Rick, said, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. He had been forced to reschedule an important client meeting just to be here. "A mandatory conference before first period? Dragging me in here like we're some kind of broken family?"

"I'm sorry," Mark muttered, his stomach churning.

"Sorry doesn't cut it," Rick snapped, turning off the ignition. "We have dinner with Paolo and Anna tonight. Tonight. How on earth am I supposed to sit across the table from them after you tackled their son into the dirt?"

They walked into the administration office in heavy silence. The school had intentionally scheduled the meetings separately to keep the boys apart. Sandro had already gone in with his parents and left through a side exit.

As Mark and his father waited in the hallway, Mark saw Paolo and Anna Totti walking toward the outer doors. Paolo was a broad, fiery Italian man whose emotions were always right on the surface. Mark quickly dropped his gaze to his own sneakers. He couldn't bring himself to meet Paolo's piercing, disappointed eyes. He couldn't face the people who had practically raised him alongside Sandro.

The meeting with Principal Vance and Coach Jenkins was short and stern. Mark accepted his one-week athletic suspension and his Friday out-of-school suspension without arguing.

The ride home was brutal.

"You're grounded," Rick declared as he pulled into the driveway. "This weekend and next weekend. Straight home after school every day."

"Dad, wait!" Mark panicked, turning in his seat. "What about Saturday? It's Sammy's birthday party! Everyone is going to be there. I have to go!"

"Not a chance," Rick said coldly, shutting off the engine. "You lost your privileges the moment you threw a punch. Inside. Now."

Inside the house, the tension reached a boiling point. Mark's mother, Laura, was waiting in the kitchen, her arms crossed and a deeply troubled look on her face.

Rick paced the living room, gesturing wildly. "He won't even tell us what started it! Just 'we got into an argument.' Over a passing drill?!"

Laura walked over to Mark, her tone soft but laced with concern. "Mark... please look at me. Is this about Sandro?"

Mark kept his eyes on the hardwood floor. "It was just a drill."

"Don't lie to us, Mark," Laura pressed, her voice trembling slightly. "We know how distant you two have grown since last spring. And when he came out over the summer, it only got worse. But... is this really because you can't accept who he is?"

Mark's head snapped up. "What?"

"Sandro is gay, Mark," Laura said gently, as if speaking to a child. "His parents accept him for who he is, even with their strict Catholic background. They love him. We thought you were mature enough to understand that he's the exact same boy he's always been. But picking fights with him? Tormenting him at school? How are we supposed to explain to Paolo and Anna that our son is attacking theirs because of who he loves?"

The sheer absurdity of her assumption hit Mark like a physical blow. They thought he was a bully. They thought he was a homophobe. They thought he hated Sandro.

"That's—that's not..." Mark stammered, his chest heaving. Hot, uncontrollable tears burned his eyes and began spilling down his cheeks. "That's not why!"

"Then why, Mark?!" Rick demanded, stepping closer. "Give us a real answer!"

"Because I'm gay!" Mark sobbed, the words ripping out of his throat before he could stop them.

The room went instantly silent.

Mark covered his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking as months of fear, confusion, and loneliness spilled out of him in heavy, jagged sobs. "I'm gay," he choked out, his voice thick. "And I couldn't... I couldn't handle it. I couldn't accept it about myself. It wasn't him. It was me."

He braced himself for anger, for disappointment, for disgusted silence. But instead, warm arms wrapped tightly around his shoulders.

His mother pulled him into a fierce hug, burying her face in his hair. A second later, he felt his father's hand on his back, pulling them both close.

"Oh, Marky," Laura whispered, her own voice cracking with tears. "Sweetheart... no. We love you. We love you so much."

"It's okay, son," Rick murmured softly, rubbing Mark's back. "It's okay. You don't ever have to hide from us."

They stood there in the middle of the living room for a long time, holding each other as Mark wept away the suffocation he had carried since the spring.

When he finally calmed down, sitting at the kitchen table with a glass of water, his parents looked at him with nothing but deep warmth and sympathy.

"About tomorrow night," Rick said quietly, offering a small, apologetic smile. "You can go to Sammy's party. You've been carrying way too much on your shoulders, Mark. You need some air."

By late afternoon, the front door clicked open, and the heavy thud of a suitcase filled the foyer.

Katie had arrived.

Mark's older sister was nineteen, home from college for the weekend. She was striking—tall, slender, with bright blue eyes and a razor-sharp wit that usually made her the smartest person in any room. She had a way of cutting straight through bullshit, but she was fiercely protective of Mark.

While their parents were out at the Tottis' for their painfully tense dinner, Katie walked upstairs and pushed open Mark's bedroom door without knocking.

Mark was slouched on his bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.

"So," Katie said, leaning against his doorframe with her arms crossed. "A fight on the soccer field, a suspension, and Mom telling me you had a 'big breakthrough.' What's going on, little brother?"

Mark groaned, rolling over to face the wall. "Please don't."

Katie walked over, kicked her shoes off, and flopped onto the edge of his mattress. "Come on, Mark. Talk to me. You look like you got run over by a truck."

Mark sat up slowly, leaning his back against his headboard. He looked at Katie. Out of everyone in his life, Katie had always been his anchor.

"I came out to Mom and Dad today," Mark said quietly.

Katie's expression shifted, losing its playful edge. "I know. Or—well, Mom didn't say it outright, but after everything she rambled on about, it wasn't hard to piece together. Plus... I've known for a while."

Mark blinked, looking up at her. "You have?"

"Of course I have," she said gently, leaning in close. "I'm your sister. And I'm really proud of you, Mark. Seriously."

Mark swallowed hard, pulling his knees up to his chest. "That's not all of it, Katie."

Katie raised an eyebrow, waiting patiently.

"I didn't just fight Sandro because I was confused," Mark whispered, his voice trembling again. "I... I'm in love with him, Katie. I've been in love with him for a really long time. And I ruined everything. I pushed him away, I was awful to him, and now he hates my guts."

Katie didn't gasp or look shocked. She just reached out and placed a comforting hand on his knee.

"He doesn't hate you, Mark," she said softly. "You two have been inseparable since you were six years old. Nobody just stops caring about someone after half a year of silence. Trust me, he hasn't moved on from you either. You've made a mess, yeah. You've been acting like an idiot because you were scared. But Sandro isn't stupid—he's hurt."

"He won't even look at me without wanting to punch me," Mark said bitterly.

"Then make him look at you," Katie insisted, her voice firm and encouraging. "Talk to him. Real talk. Not on a soccer field, not in front of your friends. You owe him the truth, Mark. It's the only way you're ever going to fix this."

Mark looked at his sister, the weight in his chest lightening just a tiny bit. He thought about Saturday night. He thought about Sammy's party. Sandro would almost certainly be there.

"Yeah," Mark whispered, taking a deep, shaky breath. "Maybe it's time I finally talk to him."

Mark confessed he was gay to his family and told his older sister he loved Sandro. Her answer to Mark is talk to Sandro he knows you.

Wil it be that simple? Will Mark have to make a very public apology and speak honestly to Sandro? Will Sandro not accept his apology because he is very hurt?  What ca Mark do next?

Mark should bypass Insta and instead go old-fashioned and serenade Sandro with some simple gay funny love song/poem. Nothing like coming out to him in his public front yard. 🎶 Tip toe through the tulips with me. 🎶

A little tongue in cheek but whatever the boys need from each other needs to be agreeable to at least satisfy their comfort zones and expectations.

Alright you promised longer chapters, this feels more like journal entries than a story.

Please progress this story because I am really enjoying it but the shortness of it is annoying to be honest.

Nice to hear the story interests you. I planned to make this just a short story, which is why the chapters are so brief. Maybe at some point I’ll write a longer story about some other boys.

@Philippe @drsawzall Mark is really poor at expressing his feelings — even for a teenage boy. So I think letters and serenades would be completely out of the question for him. In the next chapter we’ll see what his plan for approaching Sandro looks like.🫣

You know you write a compelling story, as evidenced by my comments!!!

So glad Mark finally came out to his family and got that off his chest! Sometimes, even if you have no reason to suspect your parents won't accept you, you still struggle with admitting it. It's the way society has conditioned us to feel. Internalized homophobia can be paralyzing. Mark needs to have a conversation with Sandro before the party, but you know, being a teenager, he probably wont.
