Six Months of Silence - 6. Chapter 6

Saturday evening arrived with a crisp autumn chill, but the air inside Mark's chest felt strangely lighter than it had in months.

Coming out to his family the day before had felt like stripping off a suit of lead armor. For a few fleeting hours after that tearful conversation in their living room, Mark had allowed himself to breathe. He had survived the secret. His parents still loved him. Katie had his back.

But as he walked down the dimly lit suburban street toward Sammy's house, the temporary relief began to evaporate, replaced by a pit of anxiety in his stomach.

Accepting himself was only half the battle. Now came the impossible part: Sandro.

Katie's words from yesterday echoed in his head: "Nobody just stops caring about someone after half a year of silence. Trust me, he hasn't moved on from you either." It had sounded so comforting sitting on his bed, surrounded by the warmth of his sister's steady support. Out here, in the dark, heading toward a house party where he knew Sandro would be, it felt like a desperate fantasy. What if Katie was wrong? What if Sandro's silence wasn't hurt, but total, irreversible disgust?

Mark crossed the street, pulling his jacket tighter around his shoulders. He briefly wondered if Sandro had even managed to come tonight. Sandro's parents were quite traditional and strict—far stricter than his own. After they heard about the fight at the field, Sandro might very well be grounded. Part of Mark selfishly prayed that was the case. It would give him an excuse to cowardly defer this confrontation for another day.

Then he rounded the corner, and Sammy's house came into view.

It was impossible to miss. Warm light spilled out of every window on the ground floor, and the heavy bass of an indie-rock track vibrated through the closed front doors. Parked cars lined the driveway, and a small group of students was gathered on the porch, laughing under the yellow porch light.

Mark swallowed hard, his hands trembling in his pockets. His parents had actually given him permission to come tonight, a gesture of trust after yesterday's emotional breakthrough that made Mark swell with quiet gratitude. He couldn't ruin this. He had to fix things.

He stepped up to the front door, pushed it open, and walked straight into the noise.

The heat of the house hit him immediately, carrying the scent of popcorn and cologne. The hallway was crowded, but it didn't take long for Sammy to spot him.

"Marky!" Sammy roared over the music, bouncing through the crowd. He threw an arm around Mark's shoulders, nearly knocking him off balance. "You made it! I thought your parents had you locked in a dungeon after Thursday!"

"Hey, Sammy," Mark said, forcing a faint smile as he slipped out from under Sammy's arm. "No, I'm... I'm good. They let me come."

"Legendary," Sammy grinned, pointing a finger at him. "The party is officially live. Grab a drink, man. The punch in the kitchen is lethal, but it does the job."

Sammy was immediately pulled away by someone else, leaving Mark standing near the entryway. He looked around the living room. The party was in full swing—some of Sammy's bandmates were sitting on the edge of the couch, strumming an acoustic guitar despite the loud music, while Sienna's artsy crowd was huddled in a circle on the rug, laughing over something on a phone.

Mark's eyes scanned every face, every shadow. Is he here?

His chest felt so tight he could barely draw a full breath. Passing the kitchen counter, he saw the massive glass bowl filled with bright red punch. Without giving it a second thought, Mark grabbed a plastic cup, dipped it deep into the bowl, and drank it down in three quick gulps. It tasted overwhelmingly like cheap berries and burning rum, but he welcomed the sting. He filled the cup a second time.

He needed something to stop his hands from shaking. He needed liquid courage.

As the punch began to spread a dull, heavy warmth through his veins, Mark turned around—and that's when he saw him.

Sandro was leaning against the far wall of the living room, holding a red cup of his own. He was wearing a fitted white collared shirt, looking unusually quiet as he listened to two other guys talk. His stance was guarded, his eyes focused on his drink.

Mark's heart did a violent flip in his chest.

Suddenly, as if drawn by Mark's gaze, Sandro turned his head. Their eyes met across the crowded, noisy room.

For a second, everything else seemed to fade out. Sandro didn't glare, but he didn't smile either. His expression was completely unreadable—a mix of guarded caution and something deeply raw that made Mark's stomach twist.

Mark took a hesitant step forward, his mind racing. This is it. Just walk over there and say something.

Before he could take another step, a hand clamped down firmly on his shoulder. It was Jared, looking at Mark with a mixture of concern and stern warning.

"Hey, Mark," Jared said, stepping directly into his line of sight to block his view of Sandro. "Take it easy, alright? Don't ruin Sammy's and Sienna's night. Just... stay on this side of the room. Give it a rest."

Mark felt a sudden, hot flash of frustration flare up in his chest. I'm not trying to start a fight! he wanted to yell. I just want to talk to him!

Instead, he pulled away from Jared's grip without a word. He walked back to the kitchen, grabbed his plastic cup, and drained another long pull of the punch. The fog in his brain thickened, blurring the edges of his panic and replacing it with a reckless, stubborn determination. Katie was right. He couldn't keep running. He couldn't let everyone treat him like a ticking time bomb.

He turned back toward the living room. Jared had walked away to talk to someone else. The music hit a bass-heavy drop, and several people started jumping and dancing near the hallway entrance.

Across the room, Sandro was still there, now standing alone by the edge of the sofa, looking down at his cup.

Mark didn't hesitate this time. He moved through the crowd, his steps a little unsteady from the alcohol. His heart thundered in his ears, drowning out the music.

Just say it. Just say you're sorry.

Sandro looked up just as Mark broke through the wall of dancing bodies. Seeing Mark heading straight for him, Sandro's body visibly stiffened. He instinctively braced himself, his eyes narrowing in guarded defense—clearly misinterpreting Mark's urgent, drunken approach as another attack.

"Sandro, wait—" Mark blurted out, reaching his hand forward to catch Sandro's arm.

At that exact second, a girl backing up from the dance circle crashed hard into Mark's shoulder from behind.

Mark lost his footing completely. The sudden jolt threw him forward, and he stumbled violently into Sandro.

His outstretched hand slammed into Sandro's chest, shoving him back against the side table. Mark's cup—still half-full of bright red punch—flew out of his grip, splashing its dark sticky liquid entirely across the front of Sandro's crisp shirt.

The collision sent Sandro's own cup flying, and he hit the table with a loud, heavy clatter.

For a second, the room seemed to go dead silent.

Sandro stared down in shock at the huge red stain spreading across his white shirt. He slowly raised his eyes to Mark, his face pale with anger.

"Are you fucking serious?" Sandro's voice cracked, sharp and deadly quiet over the music. "Again, Mark?"

"No—no! It was an accident! I tripped—" Mark stammered, his tongue feeling thick and clumsy as he reached out. "Sandro, please, I—"

"Get away from me!" Sandro snapped, shoving Mark's hand violently aside.

Sandro turned on his heel and pushed his way through the stunned onlookers, heading straight for the front door and disappearing into the cold night outside.

Mark stood frozen in the middle of the room, the sticky smell of punch hanging in the air, with everyone's eyes locked onto him.

Now this is turning into a comedy of errors..these lads are just too hot headed ..eh

Indeed, why he didn’t calmly explain to Jared what he wanted and ask him to approach Sandro requesting to talk is beyond me. Directly approaching someone that you had just had a physical brawl with expecting they wouldn’t be expecting more is just dumb. Sandro’s reaction is somewhat understandable that he would expect some lame excuse for is assault…not suspecting it might actually be true.

The planets have aligned to give an unforgiving gravitational force working against Mark. Sandro could have given just a little more time for Mark to explain as plenty of people were there to keep things from getting out of hand…

Then again…teen underaged drinking at a loud house party…

Mark's effort to reach Sandro and apologize at the party went way off track when someone hit him and threw him into Sandro. Both guys were shocked and Sandro read the hit the wrong way and thought Mark intended to hit and hurt him

Mark is devastated. Is this over for them? How can he recover and tell Sandro his true feelings?

Can someone who saw the hit tell Sandro Mark was pushed into him by someone else? Or, can Mark find a third person to be a neutral voice to bring them to a meeting so they can talk honestly.
