Six Months of Silence - 8. Chapter 8
Sunday morning arrived with a pale golden light slanting through the crack in Mark's window blinds.
Mark stirred slowly, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. As his mind gradually woke up, he felt an unfamiliar warmth pressed solid against his right side. He shifted slightly, and his knee brushed against another set of legs.
Then, everything from the night before flooded back into his mind.
The blanket was kicked down into a messy heap at the foot of the bed. Sandro was lying on his side, his body subtly curled into Mark's space, resting his head near Mark's shoulder. Mark could feel the steady rise and fall of Sandro's breath, along with the smooth, bare warmth of Sandro's chest pressed against his ribs.
A sudden, overwhelming wave of affection washed over Mark as he looked down at Sandro's peaceful, sleeping face. He fought the intense urge to reach out and run his fingers through Sandro's messy dark hair. But as his thoughts raced, Mark suddenly became acutely, embarrassingly aware of his own morning arousal pressing against his boxers.
Before he could even attempt to shift away, the bedroom door clicked and creaked open.
Mark stiffened. Shit. I forgot to lock the door.
His mom's head poked through the opening. "Mark, sweetie, you need to wake up, it's already past eleven and your room smells like—"
She stopped dead mid-sentence. Her eyes fell onto the bed, locking onto the two boys tangled together.
She gasped out loud. "Sandro?!"
Sandro stirred at the sharp sound, letting out a groggy murmur as his long eyelashes fluttered open. He blinked rapidly against the morning light, looking disoriented.
Mark's mom stood in the doorway, completely caught off guard, a mixture of utter shock and joyful relief washing over her face. "Oh... oh, my goodness," she said, a beaming smile lighting up her face. "I... I'll put the coffee on. Breakfast is ready whenever you boys want to come down."
"Thanks, Mom," Mark squeaked out, burying his face slightly into his pillow.
As the door clicked shut again, Sandro slowly rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand. He turned his head and looked up at Mark, his dark eyes tender and warm. A sleepy smile spread across Sandro's lips.
"Morning," he murmured softly.
"Morning," Mark breathed back. For a second, neither of them moved. Then, realizing how close they were—and both suddenly becoming aware of their shared morning situation—they hastily untangled themselves and sat up, self-consciously pulling the duvet over their laps.
A beat of tense silence filled the room before Sandro let out a quiet, breathless snort. Mark cracked a grin, and within seconds, both boys were blushing and laughing together at the sheer awkwardness of it all.
"We... we should probably get up," Mark said, rubbing the back of his neck, even though a part of him wanted nothing more than to stay in this bed next to Sandro forever.
"Yeah." Sandro smiled, his eyes shining. "Probably a good idea."
They took turns in the bathroom to freshen up. Mark lent Sandro a clean gray hoodie and a pair of jeans, which fit Sandro almost perfectly. Everything felt brand new, terrifyingly electric, and yet deeply, comfortably familiar. Sandro was back.
When they walked down the stairs into the sunlit kitchen, the atmosphere was instantly welcoming. Mark's parents and his sister, Katie, were sitting around the breakfast table.
"Look who's finally awake!" Mark's dad called out with a warm smile, standing up to clap Sandro on the shoulder. "Good to see you around here again, kiddo."
"Good to see you too, Mr. Daniels," Sandro replied politely, a bit bashful.
Mark's dad chuckled, giving Sandro's shoulder an extra squeeze. "Come on now, Sandro—call me Rick, like you used to. None of that 'Mr. Daniels' stuff in this house."
Sandro's shoulders visibly relaxed, a genuine smile breaking across his face. "Thanks, Rick."
They all sat down to eat. Pancakes, bacon, and fresh orange juice covered the table. Katie sat across from Mark, her eyes practically darting between the two boys like a detective. Whenever Mark caught her eye, she gave him a sharp, knowing smirk, silently pleading for details with her raised eyebrows. Mark pointedly ignored her, feeling his ears burn, though he couldn't stop the goofy smile from tugging at his lips every time Sandro laughed at one of his dad's jokes.
Midway through his third pancake, Sandro's eyes suddenly widened in alarm.
"Oh, shit—sorry," he blurted out, looking at Mark's mom. "I totally forgot to text my parents last night. They probably think I crashed at Jared's, but I didn't send a message. They're going to freak out."
"Don't you worry about a thing," Mark's mom said, waving a dismissive hand with a bright smile. "I'll handle it. I'm calling Anna right now."
She picked up her phone and stepped out into the hallway. Through the open kitchen door, snippets of her hushed, delighted voice drifted back:
"Yes, Anna, he's right here... No, no trouble at all, he slept in Mark's room... Oh, I know, they looked so sweet... Honestly, I'm so relieved too... This is the best news we've had in months..."
Mark glanced at Sandro, who gave a faint, sheepish smile, rubbing the back of his neck.
After breakfast, Sandro put his shoes on by the front door, preparing to head home. Mark stood in the hallway with him, the impending goodbye making a strange tightness return to Mark's chest.
"So... I guess I'll see you later today?" Mark asked, leaning against the doorframe.
"Yeah," Sandro said gently. "Text me when you want to hang out."
They stepped toward each other for a hug. Mark wrapped his arms around Sandro, holding on tight. He didn't want to let go, and he could feel Sandro lingering in the embrace too, pressing his face briefly against Mark's shoulder.
When they finally pulled back, Sandro hesitated. His cheeks flushed pink. On a sudden impulse, Sandro leaned in and pressed a quick, soft kiss right onto Mark's cheek.
Sandro instantly pulled back, letting out a nervous laugh as his face went beet red. "See ya, Mark," he whispered quickly, turning on his heel and jogging down the front porch steps.
Mark just stood in the doorway, a hand instinctively rising to touch the warm spot on his cheek, staring after Sandro in total bewilderment.
Behind him, the kitchen door was ajar. A small, pointed cough sounded from inside.
Mark turned around to find his mom, dad, and Katie all standing there, wearing identical, giant grins.
"So..." Katie smirked, crossing her arms and leaning against the wall. "Are you guys together or what?"
"Katie, leave him alone," their mom scolded gently, though she was beaming just as brightly.
Mark felt his cheeks burn hot. He looked down at his socks, rubbing the back of his neck. "No... I mean, I don't know. We haven't really talked about that."
"Mark," Katie said, her voice dropping the teasing tone and becoming surprisingly earnest. "I saw the way he looked at you at the breakfast table. And he literally just kissed your cheek before running off like a blushing schoolgirl. Ask him today."
"It's not that simple," Mark mumbled, his chest tightening. "I confessed that I'm gay, but... I haven't told him how I actually feel about him. What if he just wants to be friends again? Only friends? What if I ruin everything all over again?"
His dad walked over and placed a steady, comforting hand on Mark's shoulder. "Kid, you two just spent six months in total silence. If he's standing on our porch kissing your cheek, I think it's safe to say he's not going anywhere. Don't let fear hold you back this time."
"You two make an adorable pair," his mom added, her eyes shining with warmth. "And listen to me, Mark—if it turns out he just wants to be your friend, that isn't the end of the world. He's already the best friend you could ever ask for. Go find out."
Mark took a deep breath, a sudden surge of determination replacing the nervous flutter in his chest. "Okay," he whispered, a small smile breaking across his face.

Upstairs in his room, Mark collapsed onto his bed and pulled out his phone. His notifications were already buzzing with messages from Kayla and Miguel.
Kayla: PLEASE tell me you're okay!! Jared texted us late last night about the chaos at the party after we left the movies!! What happened??
Miguel: Yeah bro, Jared said you ran out into the cold after Sandro. Are you good?
Mark smiled, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
Mark: I'm better than okay. I found Sandro last night. We talked... about everything. We're good now. Like, actually good😊
Kayla: OMGGGGGG SHUT UP!!!!!! 😭😭😭 I'm literally crying right now!!
Miguel: NO WAY. Bro, that's huge!! So happy for you two.🥳👏
Kayla: Wait, speaking of last night... our movie date went ridiculously well❤️❤️ We're officially a thing now!
Mark: I knew it!! I'm so happy for you guys, seriously❤️ You deserve it
Mark: I'm going over to Sandro's house in a bit. Wish me luck
Miguel: You got this, man. Tell Sandro we said hi😊

By early afternoon, the autumn sky had cleared into a crisp, bright blue. A chilly breeze rustled the orange and red leaves along the sidewalk. Mark put on his coat, his stomach churning with a chaotic mix of intense nerves and wild excitement as he walked out the front door.
Walking down the street toward Sandro's house was surreal. For the past six months, Mark had done everything in his power to avoid going past Sandro's house, even though living on the same street made it nearly impossible. The guilt had simply been too much.
Now, every step felt like retracing his way back to where he belonged.
When Mark finally stepped onto the familiar front porch, he took a shaky breath and rang the doorbell.
Footsteps thudded inside, and the front door swung open.
Sandro's younger brother, Max, stood in the doorway. His eyes widened in surprise, and then a massive grin broke across his face. "Marky! You're back!"
"Hey, twerp," Mark chuckled, a rush of nostalgic warmth hitting him as he reached out and playfully ruffled Max's hair, just like he used to when the boy was smaller. "Is Sandro around?"
"Yeah, he's upstairs!" Max yelled over his shoulder before turning back to Mark. "Come in!"
Mark stepped into the hallway, taking off his shoes. Sandro's parents, Paolo and Anna Totti, appeared from the kitchen. Mark's heart skipped a nervous beat—he had been terrified of facing them after everything.
"Mark, caro mio," Anna said, walking straight up to him and pulling him into a motherly hug. "It is so good to see you in this house again."
Paolo smiled warmly, stepping forward to shake Mark's hand firmly. "Welcome back, Mark."
"Thank you," Mark swallowed hard, genuinely touched. "I'm... I'm really sorry for being gone for so long."
"We're just glad you boys found your way back to each other," Paolo said gently.
At that moment, footsteps hurried down the wooden stairs. Mark looked up—and his breath caught right in his throat.
Sandro was coming down the steps, wearing a dark green sweater and black jeans. His hair was slightly damp from a shower, and his eyes instantly locked onto Mark's. To Mark, he looked breathtaking—more beautiful than he ever had before.
Mark felt a sudden heat rise up his neck. Sandro stopped at the bottom of the stairs, blushing just as furiously as the tension filled the air between them.
"Hey," Sandro said, a soft smile tugging at his lips.
"Hey," Mark echoed, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his chest.
"Let's go for a walk?" Sandro suggested, nodding toward the door.
"Yeah. Let's go."
They walked side by side along the stone path winding beside the river that ran through the heart of town. The autumn breeze was cool, rustling through the amber and crimson trees that lined the riverbank.
For a while, neither of them spoke, but unlike the suffocating silence of the past six months, this quiet felt light and full of anticipation.
Eventually, they stopped near a quiet bend in the river, resting their hands on the wooden railing overlooking the flowing water. Mark stared down at the pavement, his heart hammering wildly. Now or never. Don't let fear hold you back.
"Sandro?" Mark's voice was barely louder than a whisper.
Sandro turned his head to look at him. "Yeah?"
Mark took a deep, shaky breath, turning his whole body to face Sandro. He looked him dead in the eye, dropping every defense he had left.
"Last night... I told you I'm gay," Mark began, his hands shaking inside his coat pockets. "And it's true. But it's not just that, Sandro. The truth is... I'm in love with you. I've been in love with you for a really long time."
The words hung between them, raw and completely exposed. Mark held his breath, terrified to look away, bracing himself for whatever reaction was coming.
Sandro just stared at him. Then, slowly, a soft, disbelieving laugh bubbled out of his chest—a sound of sheer amazement.
"You're an idiot, Mark Daniels," Sandro choked out, a brilliant smile breaking across his face.
"I... I am?" Mark blinked, confused.
"I've been in love with you for years," Sandro said, stepping a short pace closer. "Why do you think your homophobic words hurt me so much back then? It wasn't just because my best friend said them. It was because the boy I was head over heels in love with said them."
Mark's mouth fell slightly open. Before he could even process the words, Sandro reached out, taking Mark's face gently between his warm hands.
Sandro leaned in, and their lips met.
The kiss was tentative at first, overflowing with six months of longing and years of unsaid feelings. Mark let out a little sigh against Sandro's mouth, his arms instinctively reaching around Sandro's waist to pull him impossibly close. Everything around them—the cold autumn wind, the rushing water, the town—seemed to vanish entirely.
When they finally pulled back, resting their foreheads together, both of them were breathing heavily, laughing softly with their eyes closed.
"So," Sandro said, his eyes shining as he stroked Mark's cheek with his thumb. "Does this mean we're official?"
"Definitely," Mark grinned, his heart bursting with a happiness he hadn't felt in a lifetime.
Sandro pulled out his phone, a mischievous spark in his eyes. He sat down on the bench overlooking the river, patting the spot right next to him. Mark sat down, wrapping his arm around Sandro's shoulders as Sandro leaned his head gently against Mark's.
Sandro raised his phone, snapping a cute selfie of the two of them smiling together. Then, with a playful smirk, he snapped a second photo—capturing the exact moment Mark leaned down to press a tender kiss against Sandro's temple.
Sandro opened his social media app, uploaded both photos, and tagged Mark in the center of the picture. Underneath, he typed a simple caption: "Officially in a relationship❤️"
Within seconds, Mark's phone began vibrating like crazy in his pocket. Notifications flooded in an endless stream:
Kayla: AAAAAAHHHHHH I KNEW IT!!!!! CONGRATS MY FAVORITE BOYS!! 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Miguel: Finally!! So proud of you both, man🎉
Jared: About damn time. Happy for you two😊
Sammy: OMG YESSSS!! ❤️
Katie: Told you so, little bro😉
Dozen of comments and likes from classmates and friends kept popping up every single second. But then, one specific notification made both boys freeze, staring at the screen in utter disbelief.
Coach Jenkins: ❤️ I am genuinely very happy for both of you boys. However, your one-week suspension from the soccer team is still NOT canceled. See you both at practice a week from tomorrow.
Sandro let out a loud, breathless laugh, throwing his head back against Mark's shoulder. Mark burst into laughter too, the sound ringing out clear and bright over the flowing river.
They sat together on the bench, wrapped in each other's warmth as the afternoon sun glowed bright over the water. They were together—exactly as they were always meant to be, and exactly as they intended to stay.

I’ve been delighted by your comments, likes, and recommendations☺️
Perhaps I’ll write another story of this kind someday, but for now I’ll be focusing on my long fantasy project. It’s very different in both tone and plot from this one.
