Last Light - 3. Chapter 3

Chapter 3
Attacked
It was after Christmas and the group was closer together. Gifts were exchanged and thanks were said, but no one had heard from Dahlia since the break had started. They suspected she was on vacation.
The break ended and the three went back to school. Heading to Mr. Cook’s room, they overheard gossip that Mr. Cook was not in school. Some said that he had disappeared. Most just thought that he had drunk too much and didn’t come to school. When they got to class, they found a substitute, Mrs. Snow. Mrs. Snow was a very bright-eyed teacher. She seemed a little too happy when they walked in. The bell rang and the class took their seats. Mrs. Snow announced that she will be teaching the class four a while. The three looked at each other and realized that Dahlia wasn’t there either. Allison had the faintest thought that the two disappearances were somehow related.
The door blew open and the whole class got a chill. Dahlia walked in and everybody she walked past shivered. She sat down and looked at the sub.
“Well, hello. And your name is?” Mrs. Snow asked Dahlia.
“Why should I tell you? You’re not even our real teacher,” Dahlia responded while glaring at the poor teacher. An awkward silence filled the room. Mike looked over at Allison and saw her muttering something under her breath. Just as she looked up, Dahlia fainted. Allison looked at Mike and mouthed something to him.
The rest of the class went as normal as it could be with such circumstances. All was quiet and no one else looked at anything but his or her papers. Once the class ended, the three of them got together.
“What did you do to her?” Mike asked Allison.
“What the hell are you talking about?” TJ interrupted.
Mike continued, “ I saw you Alli, you were saying something and when you looked up, she collapsed,”
“I…I had to do something. If she didn’t stop, she could have hurt Mrs. Snow. I really think she is a good teacher; especially after what I saw in the news on the TV in the teacher’s lounge.” Allison responded.
Mike looked at her curiously and TJ said, “What? What did you see?”
“A news report. They mentioned how a seven-year-old girl found a body in the forest. They haven’t identified it though. They did say that it was there for about a week. Right about when Mr. Cook disappeared,” Allison answered TJ’s question while looking at Mike.
The rest of the period the three of them sat not talking until Mrs. Snow came over. She started to help with the homework when an announcement came out, “This news has just been announced. A little girl found a body in Marrywood Forest. The police have identified it, and it is for this reason that we will not have school for the rest of the week. The body, I regret to inform you, is our own Ryan Cook. Please join me in a moment of silence,” the intercom went silent and the group looked at each other. They gazed at Mrs. Snow, who sat down, traumatized. No one spoke, but all three prayed. Allison muttered more incantations under her breath, TJ and Mike just prayed. The intercom returned, “Thank you. We can only hope that Mr. Cook is now in a better place. You may now go get your things. Good-bye, and be safe.”
The whole school packed up but the three just sat there. Mrs. Snow walked over to the three and asked them to follow her.
“Kids, I was asked to come here, not because of a teaching opportunity, but because I know how to help. I need to ask for your help. This may sound crazy, but I think you can help us out,” Snow said leading them into a conference room.
“What do you mean?” Allison asked.
“We are putting together a team of warriors. The best of the best. We believe that you may be of aid. We are the hunters. Vampires are our prey. We have been watching this area for a while now, and all the attacks seem to be somehow involved around you three. Allison, you are not Christian, correct?” Mrs. Snow continued after a quick nod from Allison, “Okay. I noticed Dahlia acting up, and I glanced at you while you were muttering an incantation toward her. When she had collapsed, I realized that you would be a great help too the Vampire Hunting Squad of South Valendale, or VHSSV. I noticed the group of you sat together and acknowledged a thought that there is safety in numbers. These two are very good warriors, or so I have heard. Mike, you are mastering in the blade and TJ, in the stave. Your talents and her spells, make a great team. If you can work together on this, you could actually stand a chance, unlike Chase did. He was our greatest, and then he disappeared. Anyway, what do you say?
All three of them said the same thing, “Okay. What do we do now?”
“First, let us find a practice vampire for you to work on. You only get one chance. By the way, what spell did you do on Dahlia? Vampires are usually very resistant to magick. Especially the kind you would wield,” Mrs. Snow pondered.
“Dahlia is a vampire?” Mike asked.
“Yes,” Mrs. Snow responded with reverence.
