My Health and The Three Day Apple Cleanse

So in my last blog, I mentioned that I was having some health issues.

One of the ways this manifests itself is with pain in the knees, hip, back and neck. As you can imagine, this makes it very painful to complete a range of day to day activities. Another thing this does is prevent me from exercising. Being overweight only makes things worse.

Anyway, as "conventional" medicines have failed to help, I have been looking at a number of other treatments - for example last year I spent £500 on acupuncture, which actually really helped (to the point that if I didn't have it, I don't think I would be able to walk much now). It also introduced me to a massage oil that even now when I'm in pain, offers an almost immediate relief.

One of the things I have learned in my research is the importance of diet. One of the things I have done is to radically change the things that I eat. We have found that not only is this healthier, but in fact it is also cheaper. Sure, I have had to cut out tomatoes, potatoes, steak (all beef), pork and virtually all sugar caffeine and white flour products - but its been really great fun crating recipes for creative and varied meals under the new plan.

Which brings me to the subject of this blog; the Three Day Apple Cleanse. Because I have had major stomach problems for years - which I stupidly did not address - the function of my whole digestive system is impaired. One of the ways to "kick start" a fix of this is a gentle nutritional clean-out and start over. I was recommended to try the "3 day apple cleanse" of which you can find a number of examples just through google - but basically, for 3 days you eat nothing but apples and lots of water to flush out your system. On the third day you break the regime with a large pro-biotic yogourt to replace lost enzymes.

As I might have mentioned before, I often work from home on Fridays, and so yesterday I started this cleanse with a recommended warm water spiked with the juice of a whole lemon - then nothing but apples and water. Let me tell you - it was damn difficult!!! I was told that I would start to feel like I had a mild 'flu, and to be honest thats exactly how it felt. I was hungry, but th thought of more apples repulsed me. Through the night I was dizzy (and the room was spinning as if I were drunk) - but I mad it through to this morning and felt much much better.

I have the rest of the day to go, plus tomorrow until around 7pm (Uk time). This is much harder than I imagined (Paya and I both tried it in April but only lasted a day - this time I'm doing it alone), but surprisingly this morning I can already feel some benefit. It also helps that on this occasion I have radically changed my diet beforehand. Yesterday there were no cravings for sugar or caffeine because they had already been cut out.

Anyhow, the hope is that this little cleanse will "kick start" my long term recovery. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a quick fix and don't expect it to be. I know there are major targets to go:

  • Lose 20-30kg in Weight (long term)
  • Slowly increase my movement and exercise
  • Long term diet change
  • Move off my "prescription" pills onto natural alternatives where possible

The last bullet point is a major one for me. The "side effects" of the prescriptions are not good, and I want to minimise these as much as possible.

Thanks again to anyone who read the ramble all the way through!

I don't know if you want any advice, but have you tried aquatics?  It works great for most of my patients who have difficulty with exercises because they are in the water which reduces the strain on their joints during movement.   Just a thought  ;)

Cassie is right about water, if you haven't tried it yet, do it soon! Good luck for reacing your goals, I'm certain you'll do well just remember to make joy of all the little atchievements in the way too. That I have found to be important with my clients who have long term goals that can't be reached overnight no matter how much they want and need it to happen.

Important point there!  And as you go don't let anyone pull you down and tell you that you have to do better.  There has been nothing i found in my efforts to lose weight that is more discouraging than to go into a doctors office for a regular checkup having lost a goodly amount in my quest, just to have him ignore the 30 lbs I had lost since my last visit and lecture me that i need to lose.

Westie, I hope you will do well with the diet and that you will feel much better as a result.  I think aquatics is a good suggestion.  Many of my older friends with arthritis cannot tolerate any exercise outside a pool.  You should check it out...it may give you a chance to exercise joints without a lot of pain.

Tell Paya I said to treat you right.

Do I get another gold star?

Alternative Apple Cleanse. Careful though, these apples don't do well with water

Ingredients needed

5597918732_9419b4bd97_z.jpg

Day 1

- Immediately upon waking, open iTunes on your Macbook and indulge in a full serving of your favorite podcast

- Direct yourself to work navigating through Apple Maps on your iPhone. If you get lost, remember your iphone comes with a compass.

- Your work should be conducted preferably on an iMac or Mac Pro, however in the absence of these two, the Mac Mini can be substituted.

- Set Mail to Fetch notification at a frequency of 2-3 hours. Remember it is recommended to have multiple small updates throughout day than the traditional 3 large updates

- Throughout the day, you may also use your iPad to nibble on stock prices, weather conditions, newstands news, etc, and make sure to use your Passbook for your coupon purchases.

-  If time permits by end of day, take few panoramas on your iPod touch of nature. it is good for the soul. These should be synced to your iCloud

- Before bed, make sure to have Siri set your alarm and remind you of your next day's agenda

Day 2

- Repeat day 1's activities but instead of opening iTunes in the morning, bluetooth your iPhone to your Apple Tv and stream your music on your TV's speakers. Do not physically push on button on your tv...you must use your Apple Remote

- It is not uncommon to feel temptation to pick up that Galaxy Tab your significant other has on the kitchen counter. Fight through it.

Day 3

- You are ready to learn Final Cut

- By the end of the day, your mind and body should be cleansed of Microsoft or Android Toxins.

Careful with these cleanses, 3-day, 7-day, 2-week things.

Nothing but Apples for 3 days? You're eating nothing but sugar for 3 days. Fructose is sugar, and sugar is sugar.

Good luck though, hope you get what you want out of it.

This is strictly a 3 day cleanse.  It is recommended by a medical doctor, and he points out that 10 apples is still less than the recommended calorie intake for a day.  They are high in none soluable fibre and so help clear the intestines.  Morover, while fructose is sugar, it is harder to break down and absorption is lower.

I am following this with a quite strict meal plan, so I dont see a problem for three days.

HOWEVER, I would NEVER do more than that.  7 day, 2 week "cleanses" can be dangerous.  There is one in particular - a water cleanse - that I think is completely irresponsible.

Also not that the purpose of this 3 days is NOT weight loss.  That is a long term goal.  My purpose this weekend is "detox and cleanout".

Remember to check with your Doc before you consider to stop your prescription meds. Ask him about Alternative Medicine options & registered practitioners and ask for referrals (that way your insurance will cover it).

Apples are really great. An Apple a day really does keep the doctor away. But, beware, anything in excess can shut down body systems. So, please do consult your Conventional Medical Doctor all through the way.

Hope you feel good soon. Hugs and Chocolates  more apples.

He's feeling good I would say. :) There are first signs of improvement which is promising and encouraging. It's not an easy change, takes time, and requires patience. But together we'll get there. :)
