Its a good story and a well done film. I hope that its commercial success will make some production companies take another look at good scripts with gay themes. In the past, the only gay characters in a movie was likely to be a serial killer or a serial killers victum.

I can think of a number of stories that could be adapted as a screen plays. Comicality, Dom, Graeme, Freethinker, Driver (speaking of Driver, Sudden Storm would make one hell of a movie).

I agree with you on the fact that alot of stories can make good scripts. Stormfront from ty could make a good tv show and dont get me started on GFD, but I still can't get past how bad I think Brokeback Mountain is.

Well I'm not exactly disinclined to agree with you either. I stated all my opinions about it in the forum in the thread about it, but yeah I didn't really "like" it so much as I found it interesting. And yes I did cry a little, but really not that much, and considering I'll cry for almost any sad movie or book, that isn't such an accomplishment.

I haven't seen this film yet, though I really want to. I can see what you're saying though and it's an interesting point. As I haven't seen it, I couldn't possibly comment on whether the film would work if it was a straight love story, all I can say is that I wouldn't be as interested in seeing it. I see enough breeders around me every day without seeing a film about them. As for gay actors in the roles, it would have been nice and is always nice to see a gay film with a gay cast, but given that the two lead actors are fairly high on my lust list I have no complaints.

I agree with you Green, it's not something I can see myself sitting through. I can also relate with feeling like the only one to hate a movie, as was the case with me and Rent.

Good gay movie: Party Monster

I guess it's one of those movies that you have to take for what it is. I liked it (then again I like everything) but I can completely see why you don't, and saying I wasn't let down would be a lie. I guess all the hype got me hoping for some earth shatteringly touching piece, and, for me at least, it wasn't. I think the majority of people who are talking it up are doing so because a gay love story is something incredibly alien to them. For someone like me, where two men falling in love is kind of like the sky being blue, it's not quite so shocking. I also think alot of the hype is because everything about the movie was mainstreamed. It wasn't meant to be just some movie that gathered a cult following, the actors had a lot to loose, so did the director. It was putting a lot out there. Jake Gyllenhaal himself said it in a lot of interviews that he was warned about taking that role repeatedly.

Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is, don't worry to much about not liking it (or vehemetly hating it, which ever suits you better) and if it makes you feel any better, while everyone was swooning over their new found romance over the first half of the movie, I was a million and a half times more amused by the sea of sheep, so I completely understand how it feels to be the only one in the theatre reacting completely differently than everyone else.

Yes. Of course, people vary widely in degrees of empathy. You just have 0. As long as you know. I'm pretty close to 0 empathy too, though I clearly recognize intellectually when empathy would be appropriate.

Yes, if straight love were so severely stigmatized that the mere fact of being in love with someone of the opposite sex would cause suffering, ostracism, and lead to the murder of one or both of the parties. Occasionally, straight love stories do fall under such circumstances -- Romeo/Juliet, West Side story, etc.
