Exploring Gay Cinema beyond just porn :D
There's a lot out there to explore, a lot of undiscovered territories to write, direct, and view. I might be a simple viewer and listener to these interesting tales that ranges from the generic stereotypical story of "Booy meets Boy meets world" to some awesome explorations into human passions and limits in love and understanding.
As a writer, I love writing the human condition, not simply because it's the hottest thing out there or people will remember it a hundred years from now, but it is a part of my life and everyone in it.
Watching GLBT movies is giving me a lot of new ideas and perspectives that I hope readers will enjoy as I grow older and progress in style. While American films have gotten stale over time, following too many dramedy formulas (Comedy + Drama does not automatically make a good movie).
Don't get me wrong, I like "Geography Club" like anyone else with a heart and a soul for the genre's core themes and cliches which speak to this gay guy, but I think the most poignant issues are the ones that remain subtle and unspoken in film.
I think what got me into this stint of writing this blog entry was the short film "Apple Tree", which I just saw. The film was unpretentious, simple, and honest. I like the idea of rising above life's problems, only to be faced with bitter realities without teenage angst. These people could be your grandparents or parents.
I am no film critic, but I understand why "Apple Tree" got so much acclaim that it deserves. The subject is refreshing and true to our society of aging baby boomers and x'ers, who are unable to accept things as they are rather than pursue the ideal of what they were taught things "should be". Beyond just the message about generational homophobia, there's a deeper problem it highlights in American society, in subtle and unspoken manner.
