Anthology Discussion Day - March 2017

Sorry all, I know that we missed out on the February discussion day for the current anthology. Before we get started, a quick reminder that the deadline to get your votes in for the April Fool's Short Story Contest is 2:00 PM EST TODAY. The themes for the Spring anthology are Jagged Edges and Unintended Consequences and the deadline to get your story to the Anthology Proof Team is April 30th. So, let's get this discussion started! Feel free to answer any of the questions, all of the questions, and/or ask your own!

Are you planning on participating in the 2017 Spring Anthology?

Which of the two themes are you thinking about using?

Have you started writing your anthology? If so, how far along are you?

If you haven't already started, do you have an idea of what you want to write?

Do you have your anthology planned out?

Do you work from an outline or just write as you go?

If you've already started, would you like to share anything about your story?

If you've already submitted your story, are you planning a second story?

I don't know if I write for the anthology, but I might try anytime before the deadline. Which means I haven't started it and don't have any plans either. If I write, I want to take 'Jagged Edges'  my theme. And mostly I might right some poetry on the theme. And I don't really know I'd write another story unless I had completed the first one.

I am planning on having two stories for this anthology. :D  One is already completed and beta read.  I need to make a few changes and then send it on to my editor.  It incorporates both themes.  The second one is in the planning stages.  It will be another story in the Treehaven Woods universe and revolves around the "unintended consequences" theme.  I don't usually write from an outline, but will jot down some notes and work from those.

I said I wouldn't partake in the anthologies in the near future because I was disappointed in the reception of 'Voli Me Tangere', which is stupid of course. It's just that the idea had been swirling in my head for a long time. I finally wrote the story, was rather proud of it, and well, it didn't get the feedback I'd liked, bu-huh.

Stupid is over, it is the time of the year, and I felt the urge to write the fourth part of 'Sparkle'. I didn't miss an anthology since I started to write my first story for 'Pandora's Box', and hopefully, if all goes well and my chaotic life calms down enough, I won't miss this one.

I already wrote about 2k, all's looking good so far.

"Sparkle" is a great series. I'm really looking forward to reading more. :D

I'm getting near the end of my story - all 15k words of it. It'll be far and away the longest single piece of writing I've produced. Anyone who worked on the test server and saw my test loading of Drewcula, will have some idea of what's coming. Deep and meaningful it ain't ... ;)The Bard's Tale will be part of the Unintended consequences theme. Hopefully, it will be a fun, sometimes romantic read.

I just want to put in that authors should remember that editor's can't always drop things two days before deadline to process a story, especially long ones. Had Sasha waited till even two weeks till deadline, with my current "real world" work load we would never have made it!

My first Unintended Consequences anthology entry is all done and dusted, just a final read through to be done and sent off to the proof team (next week hopefully).

I'd love to write a second story, but since my new characters are keeping me hostage, that might not happen.

And thanks to @Kitt for editing such an enormous workload.

My word!  I need to get things moving.  I'm thinking about a story based on a man who doesn't know how to love.  After all, what is love?

I love this idea. I seem to have way too many characters who who have no idea what love is or how to deal with it. Get cracking Cole! Can't wait!

My story is actually done and ready to be submitted. It's another shorter story, since I'm trying to challenge myself to not go into minute detail as I always do. The scene sort of came to me in a flash, so no plotting needed. Just a matter if writing it down. I think it covers both themes. At least in my mind it does. ;)

My Unintended Consequences entry has been written and beta-edited. It's now in the final editing stages. I'm hoping to get an editor on the Anthology team who hasn't read the other two A.I. stories, in order to test whether this one works as a stand-alone too.

There's still plenty of time!

Like you, I don't usually work from an outline. What surprised me, was the last time I did how quick the story went. I ended up writing a 36,000 word story in less than two weeks.

It can be frustrating when you don't get the response you hoped for. I'm glad to hear that you're still willing to give it a go!

Deep and meaningful has it's place, but so does fun. I love seeing the different stories that come from these anthologies and it's great to have a good mix of types. Where it's a longer piece, I'd suggest having it in to the proof team a bit early :)

Kitt makes a great point here. It's not a bad idea to give your team a heads up as to how long of piece you're doing and find out from them how much time they're going to need to do their edit. Submitting last minute can be stressful, not just for the author but for their team and the anthology proof team.

Yep, you have just over a month to get it done! But I'm sure you can get it done in time.

Challenging yourself is always a good thing. Plotting can have it's place, but sometimes you just need to get the story out and not stress the little details :)

Remind me when you send it in and I'll do my best to get you a proofreader that hasn't already read the other two.

Only recently did I get inspired to write a story for Unintended Consequences. :) I currently have just over 1600 words written, and I'm nowhere near the end! :D I'm not exactly sure how long my story will be, but I do have a pretty thorough outline. However, if I make it to around the 5,000 word mark, I'll be a happy camper.

I have my idea for Unintended Consequences, but I'm leaving it too late. Each day, it's growing in my head, so I'm not sure it can be curtailed to fit. Damn, I hate the idea of  missing an anthology. If I can get one more chapter ahead in Morningstar, I'll start writing and see what happens :)

If time doesn't permit there is nothing says you can't publish anyway!  I know a couple stories that started out intended for an anthology but either grew beyond word limits or the author ran out of time. They were still great reads!
