Trans Day of Visibility

Thorn Wilde

I wanted to write something for trans day of visibility. Couldn’t quite figure out what to write. Maybe cause I can’t quite figure out what I am. I keep going back and forth between this joy at being able to be myself and this fear that this isn’t me at all. That I’m making it up. Hardcore impostor syndrome. I don’t have that story. I wasn’t a tomboy growing up. I was a girly girl who liked playing with dolls and dressing up like a princess. I don’t have body dysmorphia. I didn’t always feel like I wasn’t really a girl. Can’t recall ever even thinking about it growing up, one way or the other. Every time I claim this label, every time I call myself trans, in my head or out loud to somebody else, I’m scared that I don’t really have the right to claim it. That I’m playing pretend and I’ve just managed to convince myself that it’s real. That I’m stealing it away from someone else. I’m scared that it’s just a phase, and if it is, I’m scared that that is harmful and detrimental to everyone else in the trans community. I’m terrified. And writing this, I feel like I’m about to cry.

Is it like people said about me when I started calling myself genderqueer? Is it just that I want to be special? Is it some kind of narcissism, or do I just want to be part of things? And what am I really doing, anyway? Wearing a binder and trying to dress like a boy every day while knowing that I could never pass without transitioning medically, which I don’t want to do, or don’t know if I want to do. Am I a boy or do I just wish I were a boy? And is there a difference?

I dunno, this turned into a mess. I’m a mess. But even though I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing or what the fuck I am, I needed to write it anyway. If you made it this far, then thanks. I love you. This community, right here, is my rock.

The good news is that there’s no quota. There are no limits to the number of people who can identify as Transgender, genderqueer, or non-binary. You’re not taking anything away from anyone else. You are who you are. You are whatever identity or identities you chose for yourself. It’s much more important how you identify than how others identify you.

You can’t let others decide for you. No matter what you do, there will alway be people who will misidentify you. Some of us might misidentify you as Swedish, Dutch or even German! That doesn’t mean that you are suddenly Swedish, Dutch, or German, you’re still going to be Norwegian-Finnish. Even if Sweden or Denmark decide to conquer Norway again!

;–)

I’m sure writing has helped you define who you are. Even if this posting hasn’t helped this time…

Thanks, @droughtquake. It's good to know that people care.

I care even if I can’t know what it’s like to be you – Norwegians and Finns are very foreign to me! According to @Timothy M.’s favorite documentary cartoon, SatW, Brother Norway always has a fish in his hands or on his head – and Brother Finland is a dour sharpshooter who Sister Sweden loves to humiliate. Of course, Brother America is realistically portrayed as fatter and more clueless than anyone else!

If you want to dress like a boy and feel like a boy some days, and dress like a girl and feel like a girl other days, then you should feel free to do so. People around you will soon get used to you saying or showing who you are in any specific moment. I think that the more people who challenge the gender norms in many different ways, the more people will have to revise their rigid hetero- or homo-normative thinking. Hopefully, we'll end up in a world where tolerance and acceptance is worth more than religion and tradition.

The Vatican remains in the dark ages, promoting a false teaching that relies on myth, rumor, and falsehoods.

I think that says it all. I believe the Vatican is based on myth, rumor, and falsehood. I think more than half of the popes, ‘saints,’ cardinals, bishops, priests, nuns, and other catholic celebrities will be shocked when they reincarnate as slugs and dung beetles.

Yeah I liked that quote too. And you have a point, but I'd like to add 'traditions based in the Middle Age reality rather than modern times'.

You didn’t like the delicious irony of incarnation rather than their expected heaven/purgatory/hell afterlife?

Saw this on CNN earlier https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/10/europe/vatican-gender-theory-intl-hnk/index.html  :o  :pissed:

Yet another reason to despise the Catholic Church

Ugh, really wish I could say I was surprised, but... It's basically to be expected at this point. I went to a Catholic school. There are a lot of kind, compassionate Catholics who don't ascribe to any of those beliefs, though we did have teachers with certain tendencies to the opposite... Thankfully, due to Norwegian laws regarding the education system, private schools also have to follow the national curriculum. We had fairly comprehensive sexual education.

Haha, they'll all be terribly surprised. :P I don't really believe in reincarnation or heaven or hell, or any other specific life after death. I'm pretty agnostic about it. I don't know, and I don't really care either. Just care about living my life to the best of my ability here and now, make the most of it and try to do good.

There’d be some Jesuits (especially) who would fit right in in Valhalla!
