After taking into consideration the results of the polls I conducted about the anthology, the team has reached a decision about what we’re offering next year.

In 2023 we will be offering two site-wide events for authors to participate in – one anthology and one secret author contest.  Stay tuned for further details on both!

 

People overwhelmingly voted to have one theme for the anthology, and the majority wanted a committee to decide on themes, but also wanted to vote on themes.  So here is how we will be handling theme selection for next year’s anthology:

I will form a committee who will suggest themes and then narrow them down to a top five.  Once the top five have been decided, I will create a poll for the GA membership to vote on.  The top choice from that poll will be our theme for 2023. 

Anyone can become a member of the theme selection committee. I will be limiting the committee to five members, so if I get more volunteers than that, I will use a random generator to select the members.  If you are interested in participating, please send me a PM before midnight EST on November 30th, and I will add your name to the list. 

Once I have selected the five committee members, I will invite them to the Anthology Development Club, where the discussion will take place.  My goal is to have the theme for next year decided by the end of this year. 

A huge thank you to all who participated in the polls and discussion!  Your feedback was instrumental in the development of the 2023 site author events.

I agree, and I'd just like to offer a theme for you to consider: starting over.  Great job, Val.

I haven't participated in the last few anthologies primarily since what is accepted as theme I view as a title for an actual theme. Yeah, I get that folks see the three-words-or-less thing as something to strive for, and go for it if that's sufficient, but it leaves a lot to be lacking in my opinion. Specifically, what is lacking is direction. Sure, if you must limit the anthology to simple wording then call it what it is: a title. If you expand on those titular words to create an actual theme which means requiring some direction, then you have an anthology. Otherwise, the whole anthology idea can only be seen as a glorified prompt situation. I've written a few anthology stories, and I realize that what I've been doing is nothing more than writing something for one of Comicfan's simpler promptings, albeit with more words.

I've been stewing about this subject for some time, and I think giving the membership an anthology title (three-words-or-less) without needing to vote for it and a thematic direction to follow is the way to go. To the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been tried yet and maybe the time is ripe to do this as it's long been established that having too many options leads to overload, a paradox of choice.

I feel this feedback would have been more constructive during all the previous discussions/voting/idea tossing threads, rather than on the post explaining the final decision.

My feedback won't change anything now sure, but there's always the next time. And now the idea can be given time to percolate.

Your feedback has been noted. Please bring this up again during the discussion for 2024.  That said, the overwhelming feedback on anthologies over the years has been to keep it as wide open as possible to allow creative authors maximum interpretation space to write.

Now that I've participated in one Anthology, I'm looking forward to doing it again. It’s a great way to try out something different.
