Stupid Valentine's Day

If someone were to prophesize to me that 'In five years, you'll be with the love of your live, living happily ever after', I'd be enjoying my life the way it is now.

I'm single, have my dog, have my house, and am secure in my job. My relatives live far enough away that I'm not bogged down by the family drama, yet we can get on the phone at any time to reconnect. I have friends to do stuff with when I need company, but no one to smother me when I want to do my things (rollerblading, biking, reading online fiction, or just hanging out with my dog).

Deep down, I know I'm a relationship kinda guy, but I won't get into one just to be in a relationship. I'm just waiting for the right guy to get into one. Until then, the single life is fine.

It's only around the holidays, with the upcoming Hallmark created abomination called 'Valentines Day' that I start feeling like crap. Lot's of thoughts go through my head, like:

  • Am I going to be alone forever?
  • I'm getting older as every day goes by...
  • eHarmony & Chemistry ads on TV continually point out that everyone else has found their soulmates except for losers like me.
  • Who's going to drive me to the emergency room if I have a heart attack?
  • Who's going to let me know when I have a little food stuck on the side of my mouth and can't feel it?
  • What am I going to do on Valentines day? Hide at home and go out with single friends pretending we aren't bitter? Or go out and make of point of being single & proud?
  • Why are my Ex & I talking more on the phone together? Are we trying to latch onto something in the past, remembering the positive things and ignoring why we split up in the first place?

I hate doing the bitter/angry thing, but it seems to come out around a holiday like this.

Stupid Valentine's Day <_<

Everyone seems to hate Valentine's day. I say we protest it and make Hallmark take it all back.

The coupled people seem to like it. I don't be begrudge them their day.

I wish they'd just be more closeted about it and enjoy their chocolate in private. :D

Hardly anyone has found their soulmate. They only come along very rarely -- some think they've found him or her, but in ten years, or one, or a few months' or weeks' time, when they split up, they'll have realised that they weren't soulmates.

Haha. Schadenfreude is the only true joy. :P

And don't go out and pretend you're having fun, just stay home and delve in your bitterness -- or watch a movie. Not on TV, it'll only be romantic stuff; watch something brutal and violent or something really sad (gives you an excuse to cry!) or something otherwise unromantic.

Yep Vday is the fakest holiday, secretly i laugh at everyone buying there love ones rings and chocolates and red roses and being all like "I LOVE YOU" or "Wanna get married?" Hand me a barf bag!. If you love someone you should tell them everyday.

All my friends will be out on dinner dates with there girlfriends and what not, I made a plan! I'm gonna be at home and watch Sex & The City re runs. Maybe i'll go to the gay guy who owns the movie store & be like "Hi i need to rent some really romantic movies that will make me cry"

My internets been really crappy all week must be everyone on eharmony clogging my bandwith trying to find there soulmates.

OH! and something really cute i learnt the othernight while watching sex and the city i think it was or some other show like it. they were all alone and bitter and the 1 girl said "Even in lonlyness we are all together".

Just remember that Valentine was this celibate priest who got beaten, stoned, and beheaded by the Roman emperor. :)

I like Valentine's day, even when I'm single, but I'm a hopless romantic. Valentine's gives me a reason to show it. *shrug* I'm an odd little cookie, though.

I'm so not even helping. *eyeroll* I say do the bitter thing, with friends, because misery loves company and at least there'll be love somewhere? Also, it can be fun... or not. You could just ignore the day entirely. It seems like what everyone around here that hates the holiday is planning to do. It could work... but I'm a fan of bitter. It can be fun to wallow in for a little while as long as you don't keep with it 24/7. A day a year isn't going to hurt anyone. I just choose my birthdays for mine.

Uhm...ouch.

Oh my! :o and I try so hard to avoid that 0:)

Vic, it sounds like you've got a pretty healthy and positive attitude going, and I know you might not be overly confident in my prophesying ability, but let me take a stab at it just to help allay your concern:

"I predict that in five years you'll be living happily every after with the love of your life."

Now go be happy!
