What's in a voice?

Ive always hated mine. Perhaps this stems from childhood when all I ever heard when I answered the phone was my mothers name. People ( relatives more directly. relatives I saw every weekend) couldn't seem to discern me from my mother over the phone.

It continued well after my balls dropped (puberty for those of you who are not as crass as I am being at the moment.) with sorts of people calling me ma'am on the phone and what not.

I even had someone here point out that it may be the issue. He said that the sound of my voice isn't what someone expects to hear after seeing my pictures.

He may be right... things usually go down hill in the interest/attraction department after I speak to someone on the phone or meet in person.

if its the case its pretty f**ked up. I can't change the sound of my voice with out drastic action.

smoking for a decade didn't help I doubt anything else will.

PS for all those waiting for new stuff from Tiff yell at me ... my FTP seems to be broken, I need to wrestle my other laptop back from my sister so I can get it uploaded.

I surprise people with my voice as well.... I have a deeper voice than what most imagined when they saw my face.

If they don't like you because your voice in unexpected, then who needs them? :(

You're a great guy Steve. king.gif Don't let it bother you. Anyone worth being with won't give a shit.

Of course, if it's a problem, you might just try shutting the f**k up. biggrin.gif

Perhaps you should just whisper. Or be the silent mysterious stranger. Get yourself some action first... the eyes can be very impressive you know... and after that... well it's rude to talk with your mouth full :)

I understand your concern. There are a lot of options for lowering your voice. Forget testosterone injections and vocal cord surgery. You can train yourself to speak in a lower octave. Just check out what's available via Google. Check Amazon or your local library for books on the subject.

It might be worth the effort. I mean, how many decades has Wayne Newton added to his career by lowering his voice? :P

Good luck and remember, bass or not, we love you.

My dad has a great speaking voice. When he was in school he worked on the radio station and everybody comments on it. My voice is really whiny sounding I think and rather gay, which is a tragedy. So I obviously didn't retain my dads godly speaking voice.

I think it's rude of people to (continue) guessing incorrectly when you're on the phone. If I made that mistake once (even between people of the same gender) I'd sure as hell not do it again. How hard is it to say, "Hi it's ___, I'm calling to speak with ___."

That's another reason I hate landlines! When you call a cell phone you have a reasonable expectation of knowing who you're going to be getting!

I don't think most people like their voices very much. Personally, I've never cared much for mine either. I particularly hate it being recorded. Anyway, I think that as others have pointed out, that's a stupid thing to judge someone on. I'd say try not to worry about it!

Take care and have a great day :)

Phones distort voices anyway... I heard myself in a voicemail once and about died..

And, Steven a voice is just a voice.. it definitely doesn't define the person...
