Learn new words

I recently became aware of the website www.freerice.com/. Its a place to learn new words. Basicly the page quizes you with multiple choice questions and adjusts difficulty to your level of knowledge. So what's with the rice? The site sells ad space. The companies that advertise there have to give poor people 10 grains of rice for every correct answer.

Well that's nifty! I've been up about 24 hours straight and I'm doing good to remember even simple words right now! But I'm very eager to check it out!!!!

This is a fun site. But, some of the words sound like they come from a spellingbee. It's kind of nice I figured out a gaur is a wild ox, mufti is common dress, chamfron goes on a horses head, and platyhelminth is a flat worm, I don't know when I'd ever use any of those words.

 

Interestingly, when I don't know a word and I guess, invariably I guess the wrong one. I know which ones are wrong, but of the two possibles, I'll pick the wrong one.

 

I don't know the size of their word base, but I visited a couple times and the same words popped up.

I got some repeats after playing with it for a while. It was originaly designec to prepare a student for the SAT so naturaly its full of useless (inutil ?) words. I like looking at them though. All those Greek and Latin roots are making more sens.
