Chapter 12: A Pregnancy

-When they screen "Back to The Future", and everyone's pleased that it'll probably be a big hit.

"Back in Time" by Huey Lewis and the News

I gotta take this moment and say...I am a HUGE sucker for time travel films, particularly "Back to the Future". When I was a little kid I used to try and recreate the scene where Marty gets back to 1985 when lighting hits the clock tower using blocks and my toy cars.

Usually when I tell people I was born in '85, they go, "Wow, that's the Back to the Future year!" Shades of just how huge this movie was/still is. (2023: I don't really get that anymore. Now I just get told how old I am. LMAO)

Once grunge happened, you never saw rock like this again.

-For Jack and Claire's wedding.

"Crazy for You" by Madonna

You guys didn't actually think I'd use "White Wedding", did you? Too predictable, and if you actually listen to the lyrics, it's about a brother being completely disapproving of the guy his sister is marrying. So it didn't fit. "Crazy for You" reminds me so much of the 80's...man it was a standard wit us kids back in the eighties.

And for those of you that don't remember this tune...well. I hoped you guys liked it. Madonna really could knock things out of the ballpark back in the 80's.

***

Can I just take a moment and say...DAYUM, Billy Idol had one amazing face circa 1984! So beautiful and expressive, yet also cruel and tough. Absolutely fascinating. Whoever came up with the concept for the "Eyes Without A Face" video was a genius, capitalizing on the utter photogenic face of Billy.

Great choices Jeremy!

A question for you and others....which of the anti-famine songs did you like best? The American Version ("We are the World") or the UK version ("Do they know it's Christmas Time?")?

Personally, I like the Brit version better. And it was first.

2023 me: From the vantage point of now, it's kind of wild to see 22-year olds trying to settle down like this. It was much more common with Baby Boomers to want this, much less so by the time Gen Xers came off age, and even less so with Millennials. Just a completely different mindset. Gen Z star Millie Bobby Brown announced getting engaged and there was all this hang-wringing about her being too young at 19 to get engaged. In 1986 nobody would have been doing that over a 19-year old getting engaged.

Chapter 25: Careers

-When Greg despairs over his movie troubles, offers Robbie a job, and Brad starts work with Stefan's company. (Greg's mood swings seem...familiar, for some reason.) 2023 me: I think I was making a joke about Adam Phillips mood swings here?
