One of my all-time favorite singers and songs:

Peter Gabriel, "Solsbury Hill"

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill

I could see the city light

Wind was blowing, time stood still

Eagle flew out of the night

He was something to observe

Came in close, I heard a voice

Standing stretching every nerve

Had to listen had no choice

I did not believe the information

(I) just had to trust imagination

My heart going boom boom boom

"Son," he said "Grab your things,

I've come to take you home."

To keep in silence I resigned

My friends would think I was a nut

Turning water into wine

Open doors would soon be shut

So I went from day to day

Tho' my life was in a rut

"Till I thought of what I'd say

Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery

I walked right out of the machinery

My heart going boom boom boom

"Hey" he said "Grab your things

I've come to take you home."

When illusion spin her net

I'm never where I want to be

And liberty she pirouette

When I think that I am free

Watched by empty silhouettes

Who close their eyes but still can see

No one taught them etiquette

I will show another me

Today I don't need a replacement

I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant

My heart going boom boom boom

"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,

they've come to take me home."

(Btw, Kel, have you heard their version of Solsbury Hill?)

Hi SonoLuminus,

No, I hadn't heard Erasure's version of Solsbury Hill, but I have heard a preview of them now :2thumbs:

I went out to their site and found 3 versions to preview. I liked the Ltd CD Single (37B) Mix version the best.

The standard CD Mix my 2nd choice and the Manhattan Clique Extended Remix was a bit fast tempo'd for the song, but I guess if you were dancing to it, that would be the way to go.

I have more then one favorite (these are not in any preference order)

Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Cher,

Rufus Wainwright (he has such range and pathos and is one amazing singer with depth and feeling. I have all his Cds and have followed him since 1998 when he came out with his first Cd)

Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett

Ella had an amazing range....there really is no one like her.

Billie Holiday had in each of her songs both so much joy and soooo much pain

of course, well, I have loved Barbra Streisand since I was a little boy..the same with Judy Garland

I also love k d lang (she really does have a velvet voice)

Celine is Celine....such ooh la la

Cher....she thinks she has a bad voice..I love it and love her..she said k d lang is her favorite singer

I am sure I could think of more.but those are some of them.

Michael

P.S. by way of edit..I forget to add Scissor Sisters...they really are soooo cool....I can't wait to get lots of their Cds...

Chris Clavin. He sings/plays guitar for Ghost Mice, The Devil is Electric, Operation: Cliff Clavin, and probably a few more bands that I'm forgetting. He also runs Plan-It-X Records with integrity, refusing to sell any album for more than five dollars postage paid ("If it ain't cheap, it ain't punk"). He's also been known to do cool stuff like drive a school bus full of bands across the country playing cheap shows in bars and bookstores or set out on the road as a drifter for months at a time just to prove that he can. With Ghost Mice, he performs without any microphones or amps, just letting his voice do all the work.
