Site Administrator Cia Posted October 13, 2010 Site Administrator Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) So, who is participating in NaNo this year? Anyone care to share theme ideas or research thoughts? Here's a link to the website for anyone who isn't sure what this is all about and cares to learn NaNoWriMo Edited October 15, 2010 by Cia
EvaShandor Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I am! No idea what I'll be writing yet though.
Dolores Esteban Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I'm participating, too. I'll be writing a historical novel.
Site Administrator Cia Posted October 13, 2010 Author Site Administrator Posted October 13, 2010 I guess I should comment too I am working on the researach for a historical story set in 1500-1600s Scotland. I plan to throw a good bit of fantasy in though, Celtic gods and folk legends will have an important play on the plot and the lives of the characters. I've gotten books from the library as well as doing research on the internet. It's been a great bit of fun. Historical stories take so much thought, I want to be as authentic as possible even though there will be a strong fantasy vein in my story so I am having to consider the location of the story, the clan that held the land at the time, their tartan colors and pattern, the types of buildings and technology as well as getting accurate social hierarchy and interplay down. Thank goodness I love to research, though every answer I get seems to remind me of 2 other things I don't know and need to. So, do you plan to write your story as it comes to you once Nov. 1st comes or are you planning it out now by doing research and plot/character outlines?
Dolores Esteban Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 My novel is set in England, 1314 to 1318 probably. I started to do some research on King Edward II and his favorites. I'll start right after the battle of Bannockburn. I ought to do more research, but I think I won't have the time to. So, I'll write the story - more or less - as it comes to me. I did so last year and I finished in time. So I'm confident it will work out fine again this year. Provided I'll finish my story, I will fill in the historical details when editing the novel. Your outline sounds great. Hopefully, I'll see your story posted here some day. I wish you good luck
JamesSavik Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Maybe. I'm still looking at it. I don't know if I'm fast enough to get a novel done in a month.
Lugh Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Im there... signed up, signed in, already getting emails
AnytaSunday Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Woohoo!!! Can't WAIT--I'm totally on board!!! 1
Site Administrator Cia Posted October 26, 2010 Author Site Administrator Posted October 26, 2010 Check out the link in my initial post in here Arana. But in short, it's a 'challenge' to get writers to finish a 50k or more story during the month of November. It's interesting. I sort of 'helped' last year with some others who wrote for it and this year is my first.
anonymous dreamer Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 HEY GUYS!! I just recently learned what nano was about, and I didn't know it was so big here at GA! So excited to be a part of it. Not only is this my first time doing nano, it's my first time writing a novel ever! This month is gonna be interesting to say the least haha XD
JamesSavik Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Maybe. I'm still looking at it. I don't know if I'm fast enough to get a novel done in a month. I'm definitely OUT of it. The sudden death of my old PC has put a major crimp in my style.
Lugh Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 what? haven't you heard of pencil and paper? sheesh james... such a whiner.
Site Administrator Cia Posted October 31, 2010 Author Site Administrator Posted October 31, 2010 NaNo kicks off at midnight tonight, wherever you are. I plan to attempt to at least get the opening salvo out of the way tonight before I wake up and become a slave to my computer and the teapot. Good luck everyone!!
Mikie Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 NaNo has commenced on the East Coast [EST]. And thus begins my pursuit of writing a novel. Maybe this time... /breaks into song/. hehe. ~Mikie
Renee Stevens Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Grrrrrr! My internet stopped as soon as I went to post! Anyways, I'm in! I started writing at midnight and after 3 1/2 hours of writing I'm at 6,012 words, not too bad for a few hours!!! Hopefully I can keep it up! Good Luck to everyone! 1
anonymous dreamer Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 iofkae;adnfja.gank/l.akgn/.gkaegnsa.gvar/klf!!!! It's been three going on four days now, and I only have 1274 words... @.@ 50000? I'll be glad if I hit 10000 at this point! WAHH! Sorry, nano newbie ranting >.<
Lugh Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 it's ok dreamser.. vet here and it's day four and I have oh... 400 words but life has been wicked for me. the weekend is coming though.
Site Administrator Cia Posted November 4, 2010 Author Site Administrator Posted November 4, 2010 I'm writing slowly but surely. 9150 words so far. But I did a lot of prep work on the story and I have to account for the time I have family coming to visit this weekend and a few days out of town over the Thanksgiving holiday. I'm pretty much on track for where I need to be. The deadline is definitely keeping me focused. I have a lot I try to do each day most of the time so I've been writing in short bursts of 30 minutes to an hour once or twice during the day and then really sitting down to it for 2 hours or so each night. I think I would be farther but writing speech with an accent is a lot harder than I predicted it to be. Plus my story has already diverged from it's plotted path. Is everyone else still writing what they 'planned' to (if you work with an outline) or have your characters and storyline shifted as well?
Libby Drew Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 But I did a lot of prep work on the story and I have to account for the time I have family coming to visit this weekend and a few days out of town over the Thanksgiving holiday. I'm pretty much on track for where I need to be. The deadline is definitely keeping me focused. Is everyone else still writing what they 'planned' to (if you work with an outline) or have your characters and storyline shifted as well? Ditto, Cia. I got a running start, due to a month's worth of research and prep, but I'm keeping in mind how hard it's going to be to write during the holiday week. I'll be lucky to squeeze in an hour a day, so staying ahead of the game now is crucial. I'm on track, plot-wise, but what I didn't count on is how wordy I'd be. I hit 15,000 words before the two protags even said a word to each other. I had the story plotted at an approximate 65K, but it's definitely going to go longer. Good luck!
Dolores Esteban Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 I had a hard time today. 25,000 words so far. But now I got stuck. I'm still confident, though.
Site Administrator Cia Posted November 5, 2010 Author Site Administrator Posted November 5, 2010 I had a hard time today. 25,000 words so far. But now I got stuck. I'm still confident, though. Wow, halfway done already Dolores. I would have to say you've probably got a few days to spare to figure out how to get unstuck I'm on track, plot-wise, but what I didn't count on is how wordy I'd be. I hit 15,000 words before the two protags even said a word to each other. I had the story plotted at an approximate 65K, but it's definitely going to go longer. I've found that happen to me... well, pretty much every time I write I am always putting in way more detail than I expect. I'm actually trying to keep my story descriptive without bogging down the story with side details. I have already added some extra scenes I hadn't planned for but I am trying to stay with the main thrust of the story I have plotted so I don't get stuck. I've no idea how long it will end up but I have pretty much every major plot point still to come so I'm sure it'll be fine.
