Sasha Distan Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 an ASMR person on youtube the other day got me thinking. with any massive fictious "universe" is it ever possible for anyone expect the author (and sometimes not even them) to know everything about it which lies in the public domain? The thing is question was Star Wars, a franchise i know and care very little about, but i thought the conversation was interesting. another good example would be The Discworld perhaps (on which i recently won a bet, i don't know everything, but i know more than my brother-in-law). As an example, my friend Tim knows an awful lot about an awful lot, including the history of film and cinema. he told me that there was in fact an almost totally different story to line much of the three original Star Wars movies. but then George Lucas's wife left him and so Princess Leah had to be all downtrodden and whatever the hell else (hence the slavery and famous golden bikini). not many people know this, including people who know lots about Star Wars. Apparently there are, and he has seen, original story boards and bits of script for these plot lines that never actually happened. So, is it possible for anyone to know everything there is to know about a "franchise" for a better word?
Andy78 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 With the massive fictitious universes we see with Star Wars, Discworld, Dr Who etc. I really don't think so. I'm a Star Trek nut myself, and although I'm sure I could do extremely well on Mastermind with it as my specialist subject, I know that I don't know everything about it. Given the huge number of spinoffs and novels from the series, I'd be amazed if anyone knows everything about the franchise. With the smaller universes (at least those that we limit to cannon) such as Famous Five, Secret Seven etc. I think a true fan could know everything. 1
W_L Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) Not if the novels are canon.I want to see if lucas will keep up with sw novel/video game canon in new movies. Han and leia kids are interesting, but Luke wife, the former dark servant turned jedi master, is really cool from the 90s video games. For those, who don't keep up with the books or video, she's Mara Jade. Just found this video, anyone else remember playing Star Wars Mysteries of the Sith: Edited September 20, 2013 by W_L
Sasha Distan Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 yes and his name is George Lucas.... You do realise i already excluded the author/creator in my original question?
Celethiel Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 You do realise i already excluded the author/creator in my original question? so *shrugs*
W_L Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 We could have a geek off: Can you name the Storm trooper, who was repeatedly cloned? 1
hh5 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 when you start to see light saber battles in the quad ... paint ball shots between stormtrooper n rebel do you think star wars is peaking? so far not seen any marvel or DC battles
Arpeggio Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I LOVE Star Wars. LOVE IT. Sometimes I feel like if I met JK Rowling, I might squeal like a fangirl to her face. Same with Terrence Howard.....
Gene Splicer PHD Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I think that large universes tend to be unknowable in their entirety, because they change/expand all the time. I know a lot about Star Trek TV/movie canon as set forth by Gene R. and the original writers, but not a lot about the books or animated series that are considered part of ST canon. Those books/fanfics/other media have to be pretty much blessed by the creators of the canon, and in the case of ST, he dead now. However, you do see cases where a writer (like David Gerrold, who was involved in classic Trek, the animated series, and TNG) will write a story or book and it will be accepted as canon simply because he wrote it AND because he's so familiar with the existing canon that he can reliably add to it without breaking any rules. In the case of Star Wars, Abrams is onboard now, so I think we're going to see the same kind of rewrite of its canon as the Star Trek reboot. There'll either be a loophole or a total do-over of the universe to fit many thousands of lens flares and pointless explosions. Also, I think we will see some more planets blow up.
W_L Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 I shall revive this thread for one reason: While looking up LGBT character in Star Wars canon for inspiration (I do weird research for a variety of my stories), I came across this: George Lucas reveals C3P0 was gay So that means R2-D2 is C3P0's Boyfriend or botfriend
GrimIsaac Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 getting back to the original question, I'd yes, but you might have to give them time to sift through all of that information
