Hello,

new to here so I'll start with an apology in case I get anything wrong (I'm also a techno-numpty so any help/advice in plain English please!).

As a basis to work from how many 'pages' from a Word document on average make for a good length chapter on GA?

Thanks for your help,

ShadowDweller

Well, first, don't look at page count.  That varies too wildly depending on how much dialog you use.  Use word count instead.

3000 to 5000 words per chapter is generally good for novel.

In Word, word count is displayed on the bottom left, right next to page count.

My wonderful editor, author and friend always says 'chapters are as long as they need to be'.  My own average 3500 to over 7000 sometimes. On average they are between 3500 to 4500 words.  But you should write them as long as they need to be. They should not always be cliffhangers, chapters should be rather like a small complete story when possible, but sometimes cliffhangers are a necessary evil.

Writing is a gift.  Use your writer's tool box. Rules are made to be broken. Write bravely.

all the best ...

@ShadowDweller First up, welcome to GA. It's hard finding your way around, I would like to suggest (if you haven't done it yet) to join the Writers Club. It's got lots of discussions about interesting topics for authors and one topic deals with the question you ask about chapter length:

Any author can join, you just apply, and I'm sure you will find it useful. Once accepted you will have access to another part of GA dedicated to writers.
