I am currently working out my prompt plot...or rather the order of events of the plot and what order to lay it down for the 2024 Prompt Team Event (join us, I triple dog dare you). For once, I am having trouble with what scene to start with, and my scatterbrained mind is not helping one iota by outright SINGING to the scenes "Where do you go? ¿Adonde?"

I have an idea for mine, although it's more of an idea of an idea rather than anything cohesive or resembling an actual story.

Tis a challenge to match the prompt (or, in my case, what the prompt had me hunt for). But once I figured out the tone I wanted to go for, everything else started falling into place. I matched the character to the tone and thought of a theme that would then fit him. I found that randomizing lists of random words until something popped out at me helped. 😂 "Random word generator" gives a similar result, though it doesn't refresh as easily. My method of madness is randomizing things until they speak to me.

I think I know where I'm going with mine but I've little sense of how long it's going to be or how much time I need to set aside. Planning? What's that? A word limit always gives me a spur - it forces you to be brutal in how you approach the storytelling. Oh, well. Let's see...

Goodness, @northie...I tried more than once to meet a certain word count. Most of my personal stories fall just short of 40k, let alone the "standard" 50k count. I tried fleshing out chapters so far out that they became boring a couple of times. 😂 That is definitely one of the skills I lack, and if you have it and it works to motivate you, go for it! I can't wait to see what yours and @Valkyrie's will be. Mine's going to be full of shenanigans. I just have to figure out which ones are relevant to my melodramatically pessimistic MC. 🤔

Mine is a bit challenging. I have a premise, a rough idea of the key players, but I have to match the tone the prompt gave me without really having gone through what the main character has gone through. I've read a few stories that manage to portray similar things incredibly well, but I'm not at that level yet (if I even want to reach that level, that is). I could always try to figure out a different plot that matches the tone, but that's the coward's way out.

If I went by that logic, I'd never have written anything. I've never dated a werewolf, married an ex with a kid, or been hit by lightning. Yet here we are.

Status Update: So, I love my friends to death. Would do anything for them. But they sure take the fun out of Thanksgiving. 🤣 They don't do turkey, and I'm fine with that. But their docs also warned them to cut back on the ham, so we can't have honeyed ham either!! I'm not opposed to BBQ chicken and Mac n Cheese, but I never thought I'd miss stuffing and my cousin's sweet potato casserole with melted marshmallows. Worse yet, what I chose to bring is not healthy either. They're Thanksgiving-themed macarons (which isn't even technically a thanksgiving food, either, so I can't even judge). 🤣Fun times.

Thanksgiving dinner is what you make of it. I prefer to think of it as time spent with friends and family than of all the historical misrepresentations.

With all the dietary restrictions and desires, this year I cooked a turkey, a whole honey glazed chicken, BBQ Ribs, and. Ham. Home made Mac & Cheese, Yams, Green beans with bacon, Stuffing, Mashed potato and turkey gravy, and three cherry pies.

I cooked for almost two days.  Whew, glad that's over and I can get back to cooking chicken wings!!

Just sitting here drowning in my own drool just imagining all that.

So I didn't make the prompt deadline. Matter of fact, I didn't get much passed (pass) the outline. I think I'll let that story bounce around in my empty head for a while while I finish other projects.

But I am curious to read how other, better, more talented writers, handled their prompts.

Nothing wrong with that! I have more projects than I can handle until I retire and can write more full time. When you get back to the prompt one, I'll be there reading it, though!
