Philistine Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Edit: gr... that was a nasty trick bob, posting a topic on the new chapter before its even posted =\ it's also cheating. =) though i usually check to see if a new chapter is up before coming to the boards, so i am never fooled. >=)

Site Administrator Myr Posted September 29, 2006 Site Administrator Posted September 29, 2006 There was some email problems, so the new chapter didn't get to me until this afternoon. Great Chapter! Myr
Demetz Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I'd like to note the care taken to follow procedure by the deliberatorium in this chapter... on one hand - what are they thinking there's a crisis going on and they're gonna sit and register votes one by one!!?! ... and on the other hand... they have to because that dedication to order helps maintain the public trust that they are indeed the legitimate government. Now, if the deliberatorium survives the night, I predict the republic will live happily ever after... ...after crushing the Sol empire Muuwahahaha!
C James Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 I'd like to note the care taken to follow procedure by the deliberatorium in this chapter... on one hand - what are they thinking there's a crisis going on and they're gonna sit and register votes one by one!!?! ... and on the other hand... they have to because that dedication to order helps maintain the public trust that they are indeed the legitimate government. Now, if the deliberatorium survives the night, I predict the republic will live happily ever after... ...after crushing the Sol empire Muuwahahaha! I loved that attention to procedure too, and it sure "fit" given the command and control procedures in our day and age. It was also smart politically: It emphasized normality, always a good idea in a crisis. I'm wondering when the pirates will make their appearance. I'm also very curious to see how the arrival of that fleet is delayed. I'm also wondering what Sol's role in all this is. Even if uninvolved, surely they will seize the opportunity and strike? GREAT chapter!! Thank you DK and Emoe!!
dkstories Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Damn CJ, what is it with you and Pirates? Do you have a Jack Sparrow fetish? As for the Sol Empire, don't worry about them. They're busy enough worrying about the state of your immortal soul as it is. Demetz, that was exactly what the scene was for...
C James Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Damn CJ, what is it with you and Pirates? Do you have a Jack Sparrow fetish? DK, you just never know when pirates are going to pop up and take control... It's always when you least expect it. As for a Jack Sparrow fetish... Does thinking that Johnny Depp is kinda hot in that role count? As for the Sol Empire, don't worry about them. They're busy enough worrying about the state of your immortal soul as it is. Hmmmm, yes, Empire of religious zealots with a suddenly weakened neighbor that they have been trying to conquer for decades, yep, nothing to worry about... BTW, I particularly liked the approaching armored column and it turning out to be not what they initially thought. That was great!
EMoe57 Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 BTW, I particularly liked the approaching armored column and it turning out to be not what they initially thought. When the situation devolves into a civil war, how do you know who's on your side? I can only think it involves a great deal of hope and faith that those who present themselves as supporting your side will continue to do so. In those memorable words of Julius Caesar (via Shakespeare), "Et tu, Brute" comes to mind - not in civil war but in your supporters turning on you. OK, just to be clear, after I posted this and reread it, I realized some might think I am foreshadowing events to come in the story but this post has nothing to do with DOH and everything to do with CJ's line I quoted as the thought just struck me and I decided to post it.
old bob Posted September 30, 2006 Author Posted September 30, 2006 Hey DK Everything is going much too quickly for me. I have to reread the last 3 chapters! DK is bringing so many points which remember me the episodes of the Spanish civil war1936-39 with the deliberations of the Parliament in Madrid, and later the failed coup d'
Dark Star Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Hi Dan just wanted to say what a terrific new story this is and I am still following your work. It has me as hooked as the others did. Haven't been on here in a long time but have been reading as much as I can still. C James, congratulations on writing the story finally, I know you were talking about it and I'm glad to see you did it. Take care all DS

Good points. Even in a regular war IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) is tricky at best, but in a civil war darn near impossible. Also, in a civil war, people are more likly to change sides. Our own (US) civil war has many examples of pretended loyalty (such as how the Federal arsenels in the South came to be stocked with so much artillery (the South's main source during the war) prior to the war. Or, in the case of the American Revolution (which by some definitions was a civil war, and certainly had many aspects thereof) we have most notably Bennedict Arnold, who did serve the revolution (including losing a leg in combat) before switching sides. Hey DKEverything is going much too quickly for me. I have to reread the last 3 chapters! EMoe57 Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 BTW, you aren't alone in the re-reading! I almost always re-read a chapter a couple of days after it's posted, as there is often so much to consider. Heck, I read chapter 2-3 times and still miss stuff as you are so fond of pointing out but at least it is typos and not plot points! At least I hope I'm not
DarkShadow Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 I just thought I would drop by and say... You owe me about 20 to 30 hours of sleep! I love this story so much so, that I wasn't able to pull myself away from the computer. It is one of those that I devour word for word and then resent you when I meet the end of the last chapter. I always want more! You, Comicality, and Laurell Hamilton. and many more have created a love hate in me. I have to stop reading before I get to the last paragraph so that I know there will always be more incase I can't control myself LOL I let the story sit there, with the last page unfinished in my mind, until I have the comfort of another chapter to read. So... thank you for your great stories, my lack of sleep, and often times, blood shot eyes. You're great!
dkstories Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Ah, DS, if I had what I was owed from all the other authors that have caused me to lose sleep over the years...or the sleep lost by sitting at the computer rabidly typing on a story when I should be asleep. Thanks for the compliments though. (BTW, read first chapter of The Druid earlier today and commented on it...nice start). BTW, for those that like the 'realism' of certain scenes...believe me it's appreciated. I've spent more time figuring out HOW things work for this damn story than I have actually writing the thing. Emoe's been a big help (as has Trebs) for keeping things in-line with what I've already established. It's almost as bad as keeping all the Do Over timelines straight in my head (which is why going back to write another one of those stories would be very damn difficult to actually do unless I just wiped out all the other timelines).

At least I hope I'm not Psssst, Emoe, I just spotted an i that's missing it's dot! EDITOR ERROR!! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! (hmm, how odd that it's now dotted, right after I cleaned my computer screen.). I usually re-read the chapter a couple of days before a new one is expected, so that last one is fresh in my mind. I almost always find things that I missed in my first read. I just thought I would drop by and say... You owe me about 20 to 30 hours of sleep! I love this story so much so, that I wasn't able to pull myself away from the computer. It is one of those that I devour word for word and then resent you when I meet the end of the last chapter. I always want more! I've often said that the thing I hate about DK's chapters is that they end. BTW, there is a rumor (actually, based on DK's blog) that we might get two chapters of DoH this week! I'm still betting that Garret has a very eventful journey to the Adamant. I'm also betting that the other side has a few nasty surprises in their arsenal, too.
