Yes.
When he has explained to you very carefully why he has to be on the ultra down-low.
Hooking up with someone else to get even isn't a loving action, it is more selfishness.
Love is willing the good of the other. Matt isn't in love with Wade... or Cody, or anyone but himself.
“You can't let love interfere with your responsibilities,” JP said. I was about to jump on him for that....
See? Matt is selfishly putting his interests above Wade's. He is selfishly getting Wade to do something he would not otherwise do. Playing to someone's weakness to get what you want is selfish.
At a Quarter System school, missing one day of class is a huge deal.
Because MOST of them are a mess.
I am fine with Wade, but he hasn't narrated yet. I am more okay with JJ than most people. The really good people in the story seem to be the peripheral people, Cam Heely, Tom, Connie, and a bunch of other people you don't know yet.
JP and Stef have turned into good people, but at one time they were perfectly ghastly.
Maybe there was something wrong with me. Said Matt. Well no shit Sherlock.
Maybe, but Wade doesn't get Matt and how he can be so promiscuous. Wade is more selective about sex and it is tied to emotions and the heart. It isn't just recreation to Wade. It is very hard to be "unequally yoked".
I think Matt Carrswold was especially ass-holish in this chapter. He is so broken-up over Matthew Sheppard that he fucked a half dozen guys and virtually raped Justin. Then he talked about Brian and Cody in front of Justin, which is kind of like outing someone in a way. Roosters do come home to roost.
Yes, I believe he died of AIDS.
Right. Harvard is going to tell a multi-billionaire he can't do something. Universities, especially the Ivy Group, will sell their souls for 30 pieces of silver.
The name I hadn't heard for a long time was "Tom". Maybe I've just forgotten when he was last mentioned.
I think we all knew that any person from France in this story was going to have a connection to the Crampton-Schuler clan.
I felt the anger building and building. I thought about leaving, it would be the smart thing to do, but God dammit, this was my room too.
To build on my previous comments, Matt thinks he's the aggrieved party here. He isn't. Farm boy hick isn't at the same level as Matt in sexual matters. What Matt started was abusive, even though Cole seemed to go along with it. My ADA friends that talk to the pledge classes at the fraternity I advise would warn of potential liability. 90 minutes with my ADA friends and 18 and 19 year old college horn dogs have their dicks shrivel for a month hearing of the minefield of sexual encounters at the college campus these days.
Matt is legitimately fucked up (drinking, drugs) and he takes risks he shouldn't if he wants to keep his secret. That is one reason I never got fucked up at high school parties, I didn't want to not be in control. Though I pretended to be fucked up and did hook up with a half dozen friends who really were fucked up. Nothing was ever said, we both pretended it never happened and wrote it off as 'drunken hijinks'. Matt isn't pretending and using alcohol to his advantage, the alcohol is controlling him.
It is nice to reread these books. It helps in the later books to remember where all the characters came from.
Bitty is a piece of work, but I think she is in for a few surprises.
I also love the Panama Canal. The first time I went through the Canal as an adult I had finished reading, The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870–1914 by David McCullough the day before we entered the Canal. The book was amazing in its detail and insights and I appreciated the marvel of the Canal that much more. There is surely a Mark Arbour short story in the offing about two young men who meet in 1870 in Panama and in 1914 are toasting their years together and the completion of their other passion.
I think you would find in 2024 both are still highly respected. There are segments where they are not now, but it is not based on their accomplishments, which continue to mount, but based on ideological concerns.
I'm thinking of getting a 1974 Chevy Suburban just so I can burn extra fossil fuels and drive my green friends purple in rage 🤣
I see danger signs with Thor and Will. I never pooped in my own sandbox. A roommate is not someone I'd get involved with.
