With the way the ocean constantly reconfigures shorelines. inlets and harbor entrances, any captain, good or bad, would keep notations of areas they would frequently sail to/towards....

If as I suspect the ship is somewhat typical for the day, navigation logs of places visited, and yes charts/maps, would be kept. As someone who knows numbers and more importantly, how to read, it's not such a leap to see Pet absconding with either one or both....

Pet needs to somehow figure out what the location of the 'secret hideaway' is and use that information to affect his revenge....if he manages to escape...
