I actually just had a discussion about this so I'll add my two bits. Characters are called characters because there is something about them that is exaggerated from real life. For example: More emotional, angrier, stronger, richer, poorer, smarter, dumber. As a reader we are drawn to characters we like and away from characters we dislike. the stronger the exaggeration the harder we are drawn as a reader. I say exaggeration but i mean it in a gross generalization. I myself try to make my characters feel as 'real' as possible. One really great way I found was to interview them as if you were just meeting them. Are they articulate around strangers, do they stammer, are they shy? Ask them questions even simple ones, what is their favorite color? what do the like to eat? are they allergic to anything? the more you know about each of your characters the better you are at relating them to your audience. Keep the interviews for later reference, it helps when you are further along in your story and you need to get 'back' into the feel of one of them. One thing we all have come across and most try to avoid is getting to the third paragraph of a story and read something to the effect of "I'm 5,8 155lbs of muscle, i have a tight flat stomach and an eight inch tool." Which brings me to the point, plan your character further than their appearance. when reading that I instantly know that the author has not developed them past that first thought. Interview them, what do they want out of the story? what do they gain? what do they lose? When you can answer all these things then you are ready to start interacting them against each other and let the development roll naturally.

I work in the restaurant community, my biggest pet peeve is two fold. First: self centered people; it is so incredibly obnoxious when you are so self centered that you can just be ignorant and rude to everyone around you. Talking on your phone while ordering, cutting in line, complaining about having to wait; all of these things in general. Second: Drinking from a cup without a straw; bottles are okay, but i think it's gross to drink from a cup without a straw... i dunno why... i'm weird i guess...

to 3clips and others like myself up in new england, DC is 10 hours away, getting there would be quite the event for us. if we coorinated well enough we could get a car pool together and split the cost. That would help those like me who are pretty far out, we also have a lot of canucks, if we made it New York we might have a better chance of getting them. I'm not putting down either idea, i like the thought of 2 east coast cause of distance, but if we work together we could do a car pool and that'd be fun too...
