This is so fascinating. I have very little idea of where this is going and the subtle little hints are driving me crazy. I love this protagonist. This section right here just about broke my heart: A hand brushed my forehead. It was warm and grounding. I wanted to lean into it. Wanted it to mean something, like maybe I knew her. I can't imagine how terrifying it would be to wake up in those circumstances and know nothing about yourself or your life. I look forward to figuring things out with him.

I slammed my elbow against a car door a while ago and I still don't know how I managed to stay on my feet, it hurt so bad. -
The days continued to pass, and Malik’s routine became so easy, so predictable, that when it was broken a few weeks later, Malik wasn’t sure what to think. He woke up to morning sunlight shining into the room instead of Mythe or the twins rousing him just before sunup. And when he ventured out into the kitchen, he found Rhaelce and Nyrra sitting around the table, drinking tea and eating with the rest of the family. This was a fun chapter to write. I liked Rhaelce warming up to Malik since they are the closest in age and fighting skills. Nyrra is going to be Nyrra. I like hearing so much about language and the mistake that you pointed out sounds exactly like something I might do. I tend towards flubs in my native language pretty easily already. Thank you for reading and appreciate the comments!

I'm interested to see so many comments about language. Learning another language has always been something I wanted, but struggled with and I have far more resources than Malik. Of course, I also don't live in a weird ass place where I know at least one person wishes to put me in a stew pot if they could. Thank you for reading and commenting.

I've never been experienced enough in a language to have that kind of fun. The closest I came was having a patient believe that I might be able to speak French for about 30 seconds. The language here is slightly based on Japanese, not so much with the words, but the sentence structure. I'm glad you like the chapter, thanks for commenting.

Malik didn’t remember much of the walk back. His mind was still reeling from the odd encounter. Seeing Salma again, even though it wasn’t really her, made him miss home more than ever. I love it when my dad cooks lamb. He serves it with this great mint and horse radish sauce. We usually eat it a few times a year. None for Easter this year though. -
Most the research I've done states that you should know some of the language for dealing with government officials or bureaucratic processes, but hopefully I'll improve once I'm around it all the time. I think it'll be a little easier than what Malik is going to have to go through.

I plan to move to Europe after I retire, and then I'll have to learn the language of my new home, but that's not for another 15 years or so. I should probably start now though.
