A wrinkle indeed. They need a plan and Rhaelce has one. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Maybe Rhaelce is exaggerating (someone accused him of outright lying) or maybe he's being honest. I know which one, but I'm not telling. . Thanls for reading and commenting.

Thank you for the many comments. There was a lot happening here and I'm glad to hear it came across well.

This might sound a little morbid, but I really enjoyed writing the funeral scene. The priest has a lot of authority and if he revokes Malik's protection, there's nothing to stop Nyrra from doing what she wanted from the beginning. Thank you for reading and commenting!

It was well into their second month of trekking on foot and Malik was used to their seclusion and rough living. So when Rhaelce came to a sudden halt around midday and swung out an arm to stop Malik, he was surprised and started to look around, trying to see what had caught the other boy’s attention. Usually, it was something else moving in the woods that they had to check out and either hide, evade, or climb. This time, however, Malik was having trouble figuring out what the issue was. Rhae

Rhaelce set a grueling pace, alternating between a quick trot and full-on running, but Malik found that he didn’t mind. He liked the physical exertion--it dulled the pain while his mind tried to process what Rhaelce had told him. He decided it made some sort of sense. Mythe and Nyrra were grieving parents, and grief turned people weird. His mother turned into a different person after his father had died; had turned too much into drink, drugs and bad taste in men. So, he could ki

If you lost consciousness, make sure to get checked out by a doctor.

Late in the evening, when the shadows grew long and with Arrir and most of the younger visitors put down to sleep, the majority of the group exited the house. Malik followed. The pyre sat fully constructed in a shallow depression in the ground, and there was also a large pile of kindling nearby, arranged for a fire. Some of the men were lighting torches and another man circled the group, offering out small stakes. Malik watched as Mythe, Nyrra and Rhaelce all took one as did Lyr

It's a rough chapter. Nyrra is too deeply mired in her grief right now, but if that changes, it can be bad news for Malik. Thank you for reading and commenting.

I knew going in for the anthology that I might have to let the Secret Author contest slide. But it's hard to do that and see everyone else getting excited about it. So I guess I'll have to wait and see if I can carve some time out to write something fun. Gluttons for punishment, all of us.

I'm feeling ambivalent about the Secret Author as well. I like it generally but I'm juggling multiple projects and work is in its hectic season. Something might have to give.

I also don't have a 10K magical muse in my pocket.

*looks at Secret Author announcement * *looks at Hazardous and anthology entry* *starts to panic*

When my aunt passed, my grandma told me that no parent should outlive their child. The death of a child leaves a deep wound, as you said. And yeah, Malik's mother is...something else. Thank you for reading and commenting!

I get what you're saying. Grief can pull people together in a way that most things can't, unfortunately. Also, it can do the opposite, as portrayed by Malik’s mother.

There's a lot of difficult things going on, but Malik is doing a great service with stepping up and helping his family through it, even through his own grief. Thank you for reading and commenting!

It's a rough time for everyone involved. Thank you for reading and commenting!

A lot of sad emotions and memories in this chapter. And you are correct, they're building a pyre. Naivres was attacked by something very large and very dangerous. More about that in upcoming chapters. Thank you for reading and commenting.!

So what I'm hearing is that now I'm going to have to out smut...myself. Dammit.

I was a fast reader in my youth, but have slowed down considerably with age. It's frustrating sometimes to not be able to read as much as I would like but I have also found that I enjoy the reading itself much more when I slow down. Sometime I just find a really nice description or phrase and just read it again out of appreciation.

You are first, and it feels extra special because it's on one of your busy days. This is a heavy chapter, and you are correct, Naivres and Arrir are twins. I think everyone is feeling guilty right now. A death of a child is tragic, and in trying to make sense of it, blaming something is the easier way, even when we blame ourselves. Everyone who read this chapter before posting (beta readers and editors) have all commented on the statement from Malik's mom. It's pretty horrible. I appreciate the comments! Thank you for reading!

The last thing Malik remembered from that night was Rhaelce, collapsed next to him and breathing hard. When Mythe roused Malik later that day, however, the room was empty. The only evidence of what transpired were the crusty remnants dried on his stomach, which he took care of with the rain barrel. Malik judged it to be about mid-day from the look of the sunlight. He joined Mythe for his usual chores, until Rhaelce came to ask if Malik could spare an hour for practice. Mythe

It's worth it, especially if you have extra stuff. Mine has to bust out an old school calculator to look at my investment paperwork.

This right here is the reason I pay someone a lot of money to do them for me.

I'm glad to see that Josh (allegedly) is on the road to recovery and hopefully we'll see him fitting in with a good family. I feel extremely protective towards him, which is a testament to your skill with character writing. Kudos to Shay too. I'm still intrigued by the hints that not all is well here, gives everything an unsettling vibe, which I also really like.
