  1. *burp* cute “mummy” bear
  2. oh yeah, as sure as the undead won’t stay dead, if she’d climbed that “twisted tree” this story would have had a whole different ending 🙀
  3. could there be a common denominator in this deeply disturbing domestic horror story… 🧐
  4. OMG you investigated them, like in a CSI case?? 🙀 hope you were suited up in a hazmat+rubber gloves…
  5. will old emoji favourites still be available? 🙀😱
  6. Days - the Kinks (1968) some songs never get old because they have timeless meaning
  7. hahahahah classic “poltergeist”…
  8. Truly mastering English is probably a lifelong WIP for most of us, but seems to be regarded as one of the easiest languages to learn badly - just a small vocabulary will still be understood even with poor/wrong grammar (inflection etc) - “Me Tarzan!” is pretty clear
  9. …not to be confused with laverbread https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laverbread
  10. don’t think he was if so, a strange job choice of “consulting detective” (studying, understanding +interacting with people). Also he was a lover of music concerts, showed empathy (Blue Carbuncle), sympathy for the vulnerable (Copper Beeches), and had a strong sense of justice (Milverton) Interestingly, though, Holmes does suggest that his brother, Mycroft, might be…
  11. if only grammar did come naturally UK state schools abandoned teaching grammar decades ago because educators know best 🙀 although public schools, known logically as “private” schools in the US (we like confusing the rest of the world ), continue to teach it because they evidently still believe it’s important… fact is I only learned English grammar because I opted to learn Latin, where understanding grammar (including word order) is a prerequisite (and much time had to be ‘wasted’ getting students up to speed because of the frankly ridiculous policy of educators ) even now (like you) I’m still learning - but I suspect your grasp of even basic English grammar principles is streets ahead of the natives
  12. stick people are very popular maybe it’s also what you can do with what you have? 🧐 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._S._Lowry
  13. yup, that’s it! the writer knowing when to “put down the pen” at a satisfying point, because no ‘life story’ ends until the MCs are dead +buried ☠️ 🪦 👻 🧛‍♂️ 🦇and I recall reading a ‘saga’ (nifty?) where that’s exactly what the writer did…
  14. yeah, authors really don’t want to find themselves in a Stephen King revenge scenario…
  15. Blow me down with a feather if people haven’t got a bee in their bonnet about English idioms. My Uncle Bob thinks they’re the work of the devil, but Auntie Enid swears blind that’s all cock and bull, and idioms are the best thing since sliced bread because they confuse Jonnie foreigner, and Uncle Bob’s barking up the wrong tree. Anyroad, here’s my two cents, free gratis and for nothing - Auntie Enid’s got her knickers in a twist on this one, and I’m onboard with Uncle Bob. After all, as Auntie Enid’s always telling me, “Bob’s your uncle”
  16. Tim Tams?? Aussie copycats, like Vegemite 🤮
  17. Drinking Most of Europe sets min age 18 but can be (and is) set higher - 20 in two countries: Iceland +Lithuania (EU member) Drying clothes inside is a real problem in cold+humid Northern European countries eg UK (damp, black mould) but dryers have their own problems… 🔥
  18. People are being misinterpreted all the time for example, when someone says “I love penguins” they don’t mean this they mean these
  19. I think the problem is bringing in the EU. The thread title is about places and all their observable differences, but the EU (the graphic) isn’t a place it is a political entity - which is absolutely fine for discussion in the “other place” …which segues neatly into animal cr@p In the UK all animals (eg sheep 🐑 pigs 🐷 cats 🐈 and penguins 🐧) can legally cr@p on footpaths - but not dogs 🐶 🐩 🐕
  20. they’re very popular, pretty little garden decorations this size penguin brains? not so popular…
  21. Interesting factoid penguin brains don’t need encephalographs or grams
  22. you have to have ‘em with gravy and mashed potato our family dachshund loved them so much she would nearly choke to death every time she greedily gobbled them down
  23. TV ads are another area of difference for some reason British/European culture encourages the more quirky oddball /Pythonesque humour (tho, sadly not so much recently since humour became controversial..) Specsavers (British optometrist chain) I want those sweeties! it’s old but the punchline’s worth it
  24. Tea time: scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream!!! arteries
  25. the movie was shot on 16mm in “Academy ratio” (4:3 or 1.33:1) This YouTube version was issued in the US on Region A Blu Ray in 2012 by Kino Lorber, a US distribution company, in an unusual aspect ratio of 1.51:1 which means that the top and bottom of the picture frames were cropped - including the, er, excited “member” (which featured near the bottom of the image in the water wrestling scene). Hope Bill won’t be too disappointed - but this is YouTube after all... This thread inspired me to see if a UK version is available and, yes, the BFI did a 2K remaster from the original camera film elements (KL had to use an “inter positive” or something) and issued a BR in 2019 in the original full height /depth ratio - the price was reduced so I snagged a copy and hopefully will get to see the, er, unexpurgated version in the next few days - to improve my Latin you understand…
