There's something quite special about a relationship with a dog. Unconditional loyalty and love for their lifetime. And something sad and inevitable too - it's for their lifetime and not yours. Because, mostly, we outlive our dogs. And usually they don't just die peacefully in their sleep. So comes the day when we do the right thing for them - but it sure doesn't feel like it. And to get through it, as the poem says, you have to make your heart cold. But some consolation is all the memories you have of his happy life together with you. You will always have those. So remember him. And get yourself another. The new puppy or rescue dog won't replace him, but his needs and demands will distract you and help heal your loss.
