I think we shouldn't be too quick to jump to conclusions about what exactly it is he meant, really. First of all, a lot of actors don't really get shipping. I've seen a lot of weird reactions from actors hearing about who their fans are shipping them with or who are being shipped on the show they're on. I think a lot of them are justifiably concerned when a ship becomes so big that the fans start demanding it be canon. (For examples of this, read one of the many meta posts on Destiel of Supernatural fandom found on AO3.) Personally, Sterek has always bothered me as a concept. It feels like a very Twilight-y, potentially violent relationship, and Derek is kind of a psycho, really. I guess I just think Stiles deserves a lot better. A lot of the fic and art out there is very focused on a Derek/Stiles dom/sub relationship, BDSM without a safeword, 50 Shades type of stuff, and I think it's fair to question the glorification of things like that, especially when you consider how young some of the fans of the show are. I can also understand why an actor might feel uncomfortable knowing that people are writing extreme amounts of explicit pornography based on the show they're on. I suppose my point is that there could be any number of reasons why Tyler Posey has a problem with the concept of Sterek, and the homophobia angle is really only one of them and need not be where he's coming from at all.

It also doesn't really address the spectrum of sexuality to any great extent, preferring to stick with the same old binary of sexual attraction. In other words, it doesn't address why some swing both ways. I think that if research into homosexuality also addressed bisexuality, we might get closer to unravelling the mystery of differences in human sexuality.

politics Health Care Is an Awesome Thing!
Thorn Wilde commented on Thorn Wilde's blog entry in The Fantastic Mr. Wilde
Swine flu vaccines were developed and produced independently by Australian CSL, British GlaxoSmithKline and American Baxter International. HIV was discovered by Frenchman Luc Montagnier and American Robert Gallo, independent of one another, and no one can quite say which of them made the discovery first. -

Americans hardly have monopoly on medical innovation. Penicillin was discovered by a Scotsman, x-rays by a German, vaccination by an Englishman, insulin by a Canadian, blood groups by an Austrian... Should I go on? Pharmaceutical companies in the US that develop new drugs today sell those drugs for a fucktonne more than it cost to develop them. In my opinion, health care is not supposed to make money. It's supposed to make healthy people. It's not supposed to lose money either, but health care for profit just rubs me the wrong way. Just like education for profit. Education shouldn't be something reserved for the privileged, it should be available for anyone. -
And a pretty good song, too. The story in this is beautifully told, and made me happy, so I thought I'd share.

This is kind of an old video but since I can't sleep, I'm browsing content on Upworthy just for shits and giggles, and I stumbled across it and rewatched it. John Green is a really intelligent guy who knows a whole lot, and it occurred to me while watching this video that if I lived in the US, odds are I would be unable to pay for my antidepressants, and that would seriously suck. For 98 10mg tablets, of which I take two a day, I pay 74NOK, which is $12 US. That is roughly $7 per month. I don't know what the 20mg tablets cost, but odds are I'll switch to those on my next prescription and that they'll end up being cheaper per month. According to sources I've found, the same drug seems to cost roughly between $40 and $120 per month in the US, presumably depending on health insurance and the like. To me, that would be a pretty bad sum to have to pay just to function. Anyway, here is John Green explaining to his brother Hank what is wrong with healthcare in the US: -
OMG, imagine if the weather didn't change at all!! Or if there was no weather. 'What's the weather like today?' 'Same as yesterday: non-existent.'

And they say climate change ain't a thing.

You're describing the music industry, which is an entirely different ball game. And those were all stunts. Straight people think lesbian stunts are awesome. Lesbianism as a subject for the male gaze is totally a cool thing. That doesn't mean that actual gay women in any way have it easier than gay men. When was the last time an out gay actor or actress got a leading role in a big Hollywood movie? And a romantic lead? No chance. Doesn't happen.

The conversation is about Ellen Page's coming out. Actually, I posted this topic because I thought her coming out speech was really good. If you'd listen to some of the things she's got to say to people who work with helping LGBT people accept themselves, who help prevent suicides, help people with depression and anxiety, you might realise that. I think you derailed the convo because you are now questioning crazyfish's qualifications as a scientist in a sort of backhanded ad hominem attack rather than discuss the issue. I feel like I had relevant input because I posted this thread to celebrate an actress I admire, not to give people a forum in which to bash her because they don't think she matters enough. And I thought you might be a decent enough human being to care when people feel like you're disrupting the thread and behaving in a troll-like manner. I see another public figure coming out as a good thing, because I see it as us having more representation. I think it's cool when celebrities come out because it makes being queer feel a lot less lonely, a lot less scary and a lot less strange and different. I think a lot of people feel this way. And I don't quite understand why you feel the need to piss all over that. I don't understand why we have to have some kind of competition about who has the hardest time coming out, or why any person at all coming out because it felt like the right thing to do is a bad thing. I had straight friends on Facebook weigh in on this with similar comments to what's been going on here. 'Oh, another celeb coming out. Yawn!' 'I don't get why it's a big deal.' 'I don't get why we're supposed to care.' You don't have to care. You can choose to care or you can choose not to. It doesn't have to be a big deal to you. But it is a big deal to some, so I don't understand why anyone would feel the need to step on people that this actually matters to.

Oh, ffs... Y_B, quit acting like a troll. Stay on topic, or I'll report your arse. It wouldn't be the first time.

Bravery is a hard thing to measure, I think. I was talking about the sports world in general, rather than Michael Sams specifically, though you may be right in his case. You are less right about Hollywood being liberal. Outwardly, yes. It appears very liberal. Lots of actors are very pro-LGBT, the industry appears very pro-LGBT. But the fact is that a lot of the people who invest in Hollywood are ragingly conservative. Many if not most production companies will refuse to cast a gay actor in a leading role. The half of Hollywood that doesn't consist of bleeding heart liberals consists mostly of Mormons and Christians, and they're the ones with the money. There is also often a fear that out-gay actors will be damaging to the box office numbers. This duality makes the coming out process all the more difficult for actors.

I could point out the hypocrisy in the fact that every single thread about a male celebrity coming out is met by, 'Good for him, and isn't he hot?' on this site, while when I post a thread about a female celebrity suddenly we're having a socio-political discussion... But I'm sure that would violate some site rule or another about calling people out on their sexism and having a bad attitude, so instead I'm just gonna say that Hollywood is, in fact, hella homophobic, actors and actresses who come out do not have an easy time of it. People laud them publicly, but behind the scenes, offers are withdrawn, doors are closed and agents find convenient ways of breaking off their contracts. Coming out as an actor or actress is no less brave and just as potentially career destroying as doing so as a sports star.

The Way He Looks (Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho)

I absolutely love the short, and I've been looking forward to this movie for ages. Can't wait for it to become available! -
Juno is one of my favourite movies, and the main reason for that is that the lead actress charmed me so completely from the first second. I've been a fan of Ellen Page ever since, so I was a little extra overjoyed when I fount out, no more than 15 minutes ago, that she's come out and joined the ranks of proud out queer artists. Also, her coming out speech made me weep buckets. It's a little long, but it's totally worth the watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XJkZf7KhjA

Dave is a good guy, and he's grown so much. I'm proud of him. -
That actually looks really tasty. Gonna have to try and make that.

Are you saying gay butt sex can't be romantic? You may be on the wrong site.

I give you, the 7-foot long minifig-scale lego Serenity. Complete with tiny shuttles, eating area, cargo bay and cockpit. You can even lift the roof off and look inside... Look, here's tiny Wash with his tiny dinosaur! And here's the whole crew! Never before has a lego creation made me this happy.

That's awesome! I tried with a few other languages as well just for shits and giggles, and it seems to do that regardless of which language you translate to.

Thorn's Hearty Creamy Salmon Soup
Thorn Wilde commented on Thorn Wilde's blog entry in Thorn's Edibles
Lol! We had this for dinner yesterday, and we could only manage a portion each. They were large portions, but still. I froze two portions to eat at a later date. All that creaminess is pretty filling. -
Lol! That was hilarious! Used to be if you typed in the name of popular Swedish folk singer Cornelis Vreeswijk and translated it from Swedish to English it would come out Leonard Cohen on the other side, which was pretty awesome, but it no longer does that... There were several other artists and bands too, but I can't remember which anymore.

I tried making it for the first time yesterday, and was surprised at how tasty it turned out. Waaaay more garlicky than the kinds you get in the shops.
